I used to work at heights. Everything from Scaffolding on stage to the windmills in Atlantic City. My main job was the "climb and focus" walking and hanging from the trusses over a stage to get the lights aimed where they are supposed to go. The adage "don't look down" is really in action there. as long as you focus what is right in front of you and what you are doing, the fact that Terra Firma is so far below does not really enter into your consciousness.

On the rare occasion that I'd ride in a Huey, I used to sit in the gunner's well, unstrap and hang my feet out the door. Scared the hell outa me every time.

But these guys... door gunners... you wouldn't believe your eyes... standing on the skid... shooting under their own tailbooms... with NOTHING connecting them to the helicopter!

The best statement I've seen from this latest carnage came from a student who lived through it -

"My generation will not allow this to continue!"

Remember voting age is 18. Read it and weep reds.

I'm astounded that OSHA allows that. In the factories I work in, we have to have appropriate guard rails on anything over 4 ft.

I see guys in the warehouse at Best Buy who have to wear harnesses if they're retrieving a TV from the top shelf.

With modern climbing equipment, they could make that climb 100% safe with very light gear and very little hassle.

Those guys are definitely cool, but, as an employer, you want your employees to be safe, not cool.
