    Default Staff Commodore Richar Lawrence

I feel it is appropriate to announce here, that my Father in Law, Staff Commodor Richard Lawrence of BYC. Passed over the bar last evening Thursday Feb. 8, 2018 at 1830hrs.

Dick was one of the good guys and had many leagues of international sailing under his belt. He sailed and raced with his friend Jay Jones on the Nick Potter designed Cal 32 "Altamar". He crossed both the Atalantic and Pacific under sail and came up from Down Under and through the Southern Seas with Jay Jones on the the 55' sloop "Driver". He sailed his own Cal 2-46 "Huckster" up the California Coast from Newport Beach to Anchorage Alaska and back twice! He was also an honored member of the Cruising Club of America.

He was the founder and CEO of Marketing Directions, one of the largest ad agencies on the West Coast. Commodore Lawrence was truly one of the best of the fleet it was a pleasure to have sailed with him! He is survived by his wife Robin, his son Jay and my wife Anne!

My condolences to you and your wife and family. From here it looks like a life well lived. RIP.
There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

Dick Lawrence was a great influence on a lot of us when we were kids in the 60s. Generous with his time not only with his own kids but with his kids' friends as well.

Folks could do all that today, but it would be so much easier and safer.
    Sounds like a great fellow.

He started his adventures at sea by sailing a Flattie, that he built himself, off Santa Monica back in the early thirty's. The family house was on the strand at Malibu. His life long pal Jay Jones was his crew at times and Dick often crewed on Jay's boats. Jay Jones was the contractor who built the twin towers at Marina del Rey.
