    Default Vocal Power

Just a few vocal performances that have given me that tingly spine thing. You may have a few favourites of your own.

The vocal bits in Gorecki's 3rd symphony move me to tears. Sadness, joy and beauty.

^ Nice. That's a favourite tune of mine, I play it on flute and clarinet.

They recorded a great version with low whistle - Davy Spillane if memory serves - that was used at the end of Waking Ned Devine.

Pictures are all of Mull too! An interesting road to drive on by the Gribun cliffs, at 2.50, one I do fairly often.

That's a great album. I saw them a few years after it was released - I think they were touring Searchlight - and was quite impressed.

I saw Runrig at the Music Hall in Aberdeen many years ago. Great band.
This one has been posted here before, but it's worth another listen. Also requires a lot of volume to pick up the quieter sound effects..

Oh, yes. I refrained as I have also posted them before. Great musicians, lovely people, and Ian in particular was a huge influence on my musical development. I was able to thank him in person a couple of years back, but sadly it was at their farewell concert weekend.

I heard Mary Black with De Dannan, and also by herself. She was amazing, an almost superhuman voice.

According to her website, she's still performing. Only concerts in Ireland listed, alas.

Kate Rusby is astounding! Here's a slightly obscure Canadian, Jane Siberry, with her "Calling All Angels" (supporting vocals by k.d. lang, no slouch herself). Jane's shows are like hot-tubbing with a dippy angel.

Heather Rankin of the Cape Breton musical family group The Rankins, featuring youngest sister Cookie and brother Jimmie, filmed in Cape Breton.

Garnet Rogers isn't all that well-known outside folkie circles, which is kind of a shame, as he's a fine writer, a great vocalist, and a killer guitar player to boot:

One more slightly obscure Canadian: James Keelaghan, with "Kiri's Piano", a song that never fails to bring a tear.

They had the great good luck to be on tour abroad in September 1973. They might not have survived, otherwise.

Here is the very definition of obscure: Keelaghan won a Juno and most Americans don't know what a Juno is! Pity. He writes and performs great songs!
