    Default MaryEllen

This morning between midnight and 0400 MaryEllen died.

MaryEllen was a quarter of a century at AP so I had to give this post a strong lede.

Many here know MaryEllen and others at least know of her. I'm reticent about personal matters so those who don't know us personally would have no way of knowing that MaryEllen has dealt with melanoma for the past three years - three surguries and two different immunotherapies. In the fall we saw that none of that was working. We looked into radiation and chemo but neither was right. We went to Dana Farber but none of the clinical trials they were running were even a remote fit. So, while still feeling pretty good, we started with hospice. She was still fairly active at Christmas, full family and all, but over the last few weeks she grew weaker. As we upped Hospice nurse visits to daily, she and her sister planned her death - cremation and in the early spring a gathering. Over the last two weeks she could no longer swallow and we really concentrated on comfort.

At midnight I went to sleep holding her hand. At 0400 I awoke and her hand was not alarmingly cold. But my hand (I have small hands) had considerably more mass than hers. I could see no respiration and after a bit felt her head, which was cold. I then checked her pulse, which was none.

Besides the AP, MaryEllen's major involvement was the Barnstable Comedy Club. As an actor, she paid special attention to her entrances and her exits. In this case . . .

She slipped her earthly mooring very peacefully and with wonderful presence.

I'm so sorry Ian. I'd hoped to see you this weekend at the CC Boatshow, but didn't know she was so close to the end. If you got the envelope in the mail I hope it wasn't too late. RIP MaryEllen.

I'm so sorry, I really liked her.

Emily had forewarned me, but still it's devastating.

Damn. I am so sorry Ian. I didn't know her well at all, but certainly enjoyed talking with her the few times we met. All the best to you & please remember to celebrate her life - though I know you will.

I'm so sorry. I had no idea she was sick. You are one of the most revered and respected members of this Forum and, by extension, so was she. You made a wonderful team.
May she rest in God's arms and may God's comforting peace be with you.

Oh, Ian. I am so sorry to hear this. I will be thinking of you and her other people. I feel for you, especially after the year Oystagirl and I have had. I wish I knew what else to say.

Ian, I am so very sorry to hear this. A good friend's wife also died suddenly earlier this week. I can only imagine what it is like for both of you. My heart, prayers, and thoughts go out to you.

Ian, I just saw the note from Rich Jones below decks - I will add my condolences here, Darroch puts it quite well, better, perhaps, than I could.

Oh, man . . . So very sorry to hear it. It sounds like you both handled it about as well as one can, but that doesn't make it any easier. Peace to both of you.
