I'm all for more women in positions of power.
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

So the traitor gets his sentence commuted then runs for office. Hopefully the Maryland voters will remember what he did.

    SHE is Chelsea now Bob.

    " . . . and then he was a she

Said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side."

Yeah, I know the song does not really fit Manning's situation, but it's a great song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KaWSOlASWc

Meanwhile, I doubt she'll get very far in the primary. No state organization. No nothing except a confused sense of duty and martyrdom. My opinion, by the way, is that her crime was also an important public service.

I have a former student who probably fits that description (I've not thought it my business to ask). It costs nothing to respect a person's wishes to live the public identity they find most comfortable. (And, before Noyes derails this discussion further, we aren't talking about high school students. Adults can deal with this.)

You gonna pay for her surgery, I guess it ain't cheap in the good old US of A.
That however is a total red herring. it ain't your shape, it is what is in your head that's the key.
This person will not have testicles, what gender is he?

    Surgery has no effect.

The hardware section in the store will still beckon. The shackles and pulleys will still feel... nice... A sight of the chisels will still generate the anticipated thrill of cutting - cutting - cutting a perfect curl of wood.

    The smell is "right".

Shelves appeal, but not because of what they house.

And when the guns are spotted, the wonderful imaginary "kick" in your shoulder is a tactile partner to the exquisite sound.

The brightness of the fishing lures hypnotizes.

Axes swing in the mind's eye as muscles twitch.

Hammers... they POUND things. And polishes... metal becomes BRIGHT. Rope... is for TIEING THINGS UP!

    There is no rescue.

    Naaaaahhh... that's too harsh.

The 19th Century deserves more credit than that.

But SERIOUSLY... what is she thinking? Are we to assume that she believes Name Recognition will trump all other considerations - like training, expertise, leadership, ability to assemble a quality staff, emotional suitability for the job, etc. ?? Oh, wait, we just elected D.Tramp... din't we. <sigh>

I don't think that she should win. She never should have been where the Army put her, much less in the Senate. She should be able to run though if the constitution permits it.

No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen.

^ while I totally agree in spirit.. & not at all because of Chelsea, I think it's time we drafted tougher standards for Legislators.. St Reagan (may Allah smile upon his (esp gay) heirs) really screwed the pooch emptying the loony bins..

Men have an extra chromosome. The "Y". Women don't.

    From World Health Organization

Genetic Components of Sex and Gender

Humans are born with 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs. The X and Y chromosomes determine a person’s sex. Most women are 46XX and most men are 46XY. Research suggests, however, that in a few births per thousand some individuals will be born with a single sex chromosome (45X or 45Y) (sex monosomies) and some with three or more sex chromosomes (47XXX, 47XYY or 47XXY, etc.) (sex polysomies). In addition, some males are born 46XX due to the translocation of a tiny section of the sex determining region of the Y chromosome. Similarly some females are also born 46XY due to mutations in the Y chromosome. Clearly, there are not only females who are XX and males who are XY, but rather, there is a range of chromosome complements, hormone balances, and phenotypic variations that determine sex.

The biological differences between men and women result from two processes: sex determination and differentiation.(3) The biological process of sex determination controls whether the male or female sexual differentiation pathway will be followed. The process of biological sex differentiation (development of a given sex) involves many genetically regulated, hierarchical developmental steps. More than 95% of the Y chromosome is male-specific (4) and a single copy of the Y chromosome is able to induce testicular differentiation of the embryonic gonad. The Y chromosome acts as a dominant inducer of male phenotype and individuals having four X chromosomes and one Y chromosome (49XXXXY) are phenotypically male. (5) When a Y chromosome is present, early embryonic testes develop around the 10th week of pregnancy. In the absence of both a Y chromosome and the influence of a testis-determining factor (TDF), ovaries develop.

Gender, typically described in terms of masculinity and femininity, is a social construction that varies across different cultures and over time. (6) There are a number of cultures, for example, in which greater gender diversity exists and sex and gender are not always neatly divided along binary lines such as male and female or homosexual and heterosexual. The Berdache in North America, the fa’afafine (Samoan for “the way of a woman”) in the Pacific, and the kathoey in Thailand are all examples of different gender categories that differ from the traditional Western division of people into males and females. Further, among certain North American native communities, gender is seen more in terms of a continuum than categories, with special acknowledgement of “two-spirited” people who encompass both masculine and feminine qualities and characteristics. It is apparent, then, that different cultures have taken different approaches to creating gender distinctions, with more or less recognition of fluidity and complexity of gender
and this is just the so called 'hard coded' basics. In the always inspiring words of J.B.S Haldane -

I have no doubt that in reality the future will be vastly more surprising than anything I can imagine. Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose.
