Default Tad Roberts 24' expedition ketch free plans

Hello to all, first post. I was wondering if anyone has ever downloaded the plans from Tad Roberts website for the expedition ketch Tern. I've done every search title I could think of but struck out. The problem I'm having is the mast steps on the plans don't match the sail plan. I'm trying to learn how to loft and found this issue. Not complaining about free plans but was wondering if this is one of those you have to know things, or your just supposed to figure out. Thanks for the ton of stuff I've learned from you guys allready. Ron

Tad is pretty active on Facebook, Ron. It’s worth friending him just to see the great boats he posts about. Definitely a highlight of my Facebook feed.

Ok thanks Steven, I,m not a big facebook guy but I'll try. I was just curious if it was a normal work it out thing like I've dealt with in commercial construction plans. navydog, sorry but I don't know how to do links. I'm a 60 year old lifetime construction dude and not so techno. Thank you PeterSibley for the pic and for your wonderfull small boat pron thread in the bilge.

He also shows up here regularly and I'd expect him to notice this and respond.

Looks like a great expedition boat. Tons of sail area for light winds. And when it picks up and the heel becomes uncomfortable, just douse the main and carry on.

With lots of space for a tent at night.

Mind you, 2 ft of bowsprit would help the appearance, if not the math.

Not really having any experience in ocean going sailboats I wasn't sure but thought that might be the case. It just looked really stout to me with a ton of room and a cool rig.

My brother has a downloaded copy of them. We perused them over the Christmas holidays this year when I was at his place. Quite a neat boat. Looks like one heck of a lot of fun, both to build and to sail after.

Interesting, of the many hours I've spent perusing them I had not noticed that (as Sailor indicated, we had full scale print outs spread out on the table this Christmas...) Sheet 1 clearly shows the main mast at frame 0, while on the sail plan (and the photos of it) it appears to be at / around frame 1...

I'm going to assume that (based on the photo) it's frame 1, not 0 for the main mast. That said, it's was always my intention to contact Tad Roberts directly prior to a building it (it's been on the short list for many years...) even if he's shared them for free... he's got a lot of time invested in them... Now I'll have an excuse for the contact!!!! of course a few things need sorting out before another boat build, chiefly power/insulation/siding/doors/windows on the shop...

    Ron,
Looking at the plan I see what what your talking about. It looks like in the construction plan he went for a true cat ketch but in the plan he wanted to add the jib. In truth it would be easy to have both or as was said add a bow sprit. Bow spirits in a small boat are a PIA in a small narrow boat as far as I'm concerned.

The completed boat has the masts installed in the manner drawn in the sail plan. The main is supported by a thwart forward of the centerboard trunk.

It seems that the pages about the build have disappeared. Too bad there were lots of good pics with thier story there.
I studied this boat quite a bit some time back.
    Contacting the above may help.

I noticed that as well navydog. It seemed to me that the aft mast is not against the centerboard trunk but supported by extending the centerboard cap (I think that's what it's called) to the next thwart aft leaving a space between the mast step and the centerboard trunk.

I spent some time looking over this plans awhile back. I sure do like it! I noticed the discpency between the sail plan and the other sheets, what I thought of is that the sail plan is the sail plan is for the Tern but the other build details have the sail set up as in his Ratty, the Tern is a lengthened version of the Ratty. By why Ratty’s style sail plan is detailed in there I don’t know. Maybe in the original design process he had the Ratty sail plan in mind and switched it at a latter date. I do like the Standing Lug Cat Ketch.

At first I thought the whole plan might be Ratty but after adding all the dimensions station to station it added up to 23'9'' Either sailplan would be cool but the gaff rig calls to me. So pretty.

The draft is another plus. Pull up almost anywhere to explore.

The boat went through a number of rig evolution's, starting as a sprit-rigged cat-ketch. Whichever rig you want the mast steps are blocks laminated and screwed to the apron, and thwarts (with a small doubler) form the partners.

I think this was the first idea.

    Brouwer24.jpg

Followed by the lug yawl idea.

    longboat.jpg

    Then an almost-gunter ketch.

    RevisedExped.jpg

Then the gaff-ketch with sprit boom. Trying to minimize the head-banging, but the builder/owners wouldn't have it.

    Epedrig3.jpg

The final drawing has no main boom but the actual boat has a main boom.

Tad thank you so much for the response and the sail plan drawings. Your design is quite nice. Beautiful boat Ron
