Yeah. He's rude. The voters disregarded it. Others may well have voted for him BECAUSE of it. Indeed, they may have done precisely because it horrifies the virtue signaling set. Some of you struggle so hard to understand this.

Bzzzzzt, wrong again. People understand that just fine. It just doesn't excuse his behaviour... or yours.

    we get it
Uh, no. This thread is now 12 pages, ostensibly about the deplorability of Trump's rudeness, yet it is filled with rude insults from the "good guys."

    Clearly you don't "get it."

One more time; it still hasn't sunk in. The larger problem is not Trump's rudeness, nor the language he used - although not being able to control one's outbursts causes a lot of problems for any president. The problem is his idea that coming from a poor country with lots of problems makes one an undesirable immigrant.

Keith, your arbitrary determination as to "what the problem is" is given as if it is a universal conclusion. It isn't, in an America where "assimilation" is now a code word for racism for the identity politics bunch.

    Your abstractions are profoundly naive.

It must be so horribly frustrating to be so brilliant in the midst of all us dullards. We're naive. We Just. Can't. Get. It.

The president isn't an amoral sociopathic asshole, he's just defining his aesthetic.

When aesthetics bear on choices, they become part of the choices, for which there is responsibility. "Defining" your aesthetic even if only to yourself is making choices, for which there is responsibility. It's you choosing who you are going to be.

A distinction without a difference. Some wanted him to be rude "to the right people" as you put it. Others adopted the rudeness after the fact.

What we struggle against is the terrible conclusion to be drawn, which is that this isn't just something you people did to have an opportunity to change policy; this is your policy. It's what you want government to mainly do. Address a problem here or there, if there's time.

It can only last as long as you can turn people into irrational bigots; and it will never have any point other than a perpetual search for emotional satisfaction to fill the void.

Senator Graham stumbles towards the truth:

In an interview, Mr. Graham said that he responded to Mr. Trump’s complaints about Norwegians not migrating to America.

“The conversation was going down the wrong road, I thought,” he said. “Here’s how I started, I said, ‘If you’re from Norway, Mr. President, you’re a Norwegian.’ But if you’re from America what are you? It’s not an ethnic group, it’s not a religion — it’s an ideal. You can’t tell Americans by the way they look. People from all over the world want to be part of this ideal. And that diversity is our strength not our weakness.”

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/16/u...T.nav=top-news
The implication that half-aware people like Senator Graham resolutely refuse to face is that this is a dagger in the heart of tribalism. And so they never reach the question of whether tribalism will die quietly.

Can you imagine Trump's thoughts as he endured Graham's patient lecture on the elemental principle of American government? Or Graham's face while speaking, while in his mind, he's working furiously to deny the implications of the S hole comment, if not to un-hear it altogether?

What Norwegian would want to leave Norway and all they've accomplished for a political cesspool?
