I’m not sure, but there is nothing private about a meeting concerning DACA legislation. Those conversations are everyone’s business.

if it's a closed door meeting with no press in the room then what is said there can remain confidential unless someone decides to Go Public... in this case with BAD publicity for already depressed and financially struggling parts of the world...

and WHY GO PUBLIC.... what advantage could there be for Democrats publicizing a negative statement by the president of the USA about of struggling 3rd world countries...?

Because the President Of Ghana should know what the President Of The USA thinks of him and his country. Because the people of Haiti should know what the President Of The USA thinks of them.

Republicans were spilling, too. You can’t blame this on just Democrats. It is obvious to anyone with half a brain that trump is incapable of being Presdential.

harm US relations with these countries just to make the President look bad?

You seem to miss the point as to who is the laughing stock. None of us are laughing. None of the world is laughing. We are crying because the issue to some people isn’t that someone CALLED a bunch of countries poopholes, but that someone told about it.

It is crass and gross, and frankly, no way I want ANY politician representing me to speak. Ever.

I wouldn’t call someone’s home a poophole. I know what it’s like to have no home, and to lose a home and start over. And, I know what it is like to be desperately poor. True, desperately poor here, but destitute nonetheless.

My home now is not what one would call elegant, and certainly not large, and my pockets run very shallow. And there isn’t any sack of gold to back up my pockets, nor daddy to turn to for a loan.

What must this President, then, think of me, and my shanty? What a poophole, eh?

Trump is not the most powerful man in the most powerful nation on earth and is doing all he can to take down the US in the eyes of the rest of the world. Don't try to blame it on others.

interesting, just came across this short critique of the televised immigration negotiation which took place at the WH a couple days ago.

"Think about it! After years of Disfunctional I saw with my eyes a room full of Congressional delegates. Comprised of both parties with Trump in charge acting like adults under the lights. Secure the Boarders (somehow), address DACA (some how) and institute meaningful immigration reform. The lights came on and they were all in a real sweat to not be obstructive and take back the responsibility of ruling the nation. Amazing to me given the wailing outside.this has to be good!"

All the Fire and Furry over this alleged comment could certainly be calculated to give the Democrats more maneuvering room ... as they seem to be in a position where they will have to choose between the Wall and DACA... or nothing.

"even if the President did say that"

Because Daniel he IS the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES and Head of State and CinC of the most powerful nation on earth and should not be using words like that at all no matter what he thinks. It demeans him, the office, and the country and furthers the cause of those who would dismiss human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

What I found astounding and amazing was NPR had to have a segment with the head of policy and practices to explain that they had decided to use the full word ****hole when referring to what the President Of The United States called Haiti and african nations. They felt it was factual and necessary to give the full meaning of the President's remarks.

NPR's Approach To A Reported Presidential Profanity Evolves

Note to readers: this post uses profanity that may offend some.
First NPR didn't use "the word" and then it did. I'm referring, of course, to the vulgar slur ("****hole countries") President Trump was reported to have used to disparage African nations during a meeting Thursday on immigration with lawmakers at the White House. At the meeting, NPR reported, he also "questioned why the United States would admit immigrants from them and other nations, like Haiti" and El Salvador, instead of countries like Norway.
In a Thursday evening All Things Considered report, NPR referred to Trump's remarks only as a "vulgar slur," and reporter Kelsey Snell said listeners who wanted the full phrase could look at the NPR website, where it was rendered as "s***hole." In the first 5 a.m. go-round of Morning Edition today that guidance stood, but by 8 a.m., NPR started using the word, preceded by a brief heads-up about the language, and eventually began spelling it out online, as well.
Listener reaction came in from all sides. Before NPR changed its guidance, a number of listeners expressed their disappointment about the decision not to use the word. Afterwards, some praised the change but others complained, some citing the possibility that children might have been in the audience. No surprise there: NPR's audience is wide and not everyone is going to agree on what's right, especially on such sensitive matters as the use of vulgar language.
I'll say upfront that I think NPR should have used the word (sparingly) all along. The president said it, according to sources who heard him, and the word is fundamental to understanding the story, and arguably his beliefs on immigration policy. But it's worth listening to NPR's evolving thinking and approach, which does not reflect a timidity or reluctance to offend, despite was some listeners (perhaps understandably) thought.
Here's a sampling of emails to my office. Chase McGee, a Durham, N.C., listener, wrote: "While I understand the need to maintain an air of dignity and couth, I feel it is puerile to bend to the arbitrary social mores of not using 'naughty words' when those naughty words are focal to the point of the story and give context to the narrative. The world is not a sterile place, I feel an established news outlet such as NPR mustn't try to purvey it as such, especially in these times."
Another listener, from Pennsylvania, wasn't so civil, "I can't believe that NPR newscasters will not say the profane word President Trump used in his controversial comments about immigration. This was an important news story and the term he used, '****hole countries,' was the story. I can't believe I have to say this to real news journalists but WHEN PROFANITY IS THE STORY, YOU REPORT THE PROFANITY."

Good job Daniel, I wondered if this subject would be brought up. A few posters got close, but not quite there. President Trump should probably be more careful with his language when in mixed company: calling a spade a spade is no longer acceptable, and there is no depth dims won't stoop to, to gain political ends.

Those places are holes. That's why the people want to leave and take refuge, or emigrate elsewhere: and why dims, in so many words, say you can't send them back. But to call a hole, a hole, is breathlessly hideous. Except it didn't, and won't, work anymore, because calling a hole, a hole, may be a bit uncouth; but it's not racist.

Durbin got to get on tv, and say a vulgar word on tv: and tv stations got to say, and display, vulgar words on their shows: but whatever they thought would be gained by it, was lost in the realization that they have no ones best interest at heart: just politics.
Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country. John Fn Kennedy. (D)

Sheesh, our Republican friends are really trying to live up to their reputation as being the slowest knives in the drawer. You need it explained to you? I will explain it to you... but don't get all whiny with me if you think I'm talking down to you. You requested it.

Words matter. He could have said, 'economically disadvantaged' or 'politically unstable' or some other phrase that more accurately describes the conditions of the countries and the challenges faced by the people who live there. But that would require the ability to consider what other people experience or value. The ability to consider what other people experience or value is called "empathy" and it's generally something we look for in leaders.

Trump's use of the word "s**thole" reinforces the impression that he can only evaluate things based on whether or not they bring pleasure to him. Often, when he wants to attack someone (especially women) his first comment is about their appearance. Remember what he said about Carly Fiorina's face? She was running for political office, not a beauty pageant. Why should the appearance of her face matter? We have heard him degrade women based on the size of their breasts, or how much they weigh. He belittled Mika Brzezinski's (alleged) face lift. He insulted Heidi Klum for no apparent reason. When trying to pick a fight with Megyn Kelly, he said she had ""blood coming out of her wherever" ... and when Hillary Clinton had to go to the bathroom, he repeatedly described it as "disgusting" as if he can't fathom the fact that everyone goes to the bathroom.

The impression he creates by these repeated statements is that he judges everything according to a very shallow and impulse-driven set of standards that are all about him and his desires. People only have value if they are attractive to him. If women's bodies do other things besides appeal to him (such as menstruate or pee), he finds it revolting because those functions serve no value to him. If he doesn't like a woman's face or figure, he acts like it negates their value.

It's the same thing as referring to a country as a "s**thole." The impression he gives is that if he can't play 18 holes of golf and then have a nice, (over-cooked) steak, the country might as well be wiped off the map. Many people from Haiti love Haiti. Maybe they don't like the politics and the economy, but it doesn't mean they have devalued the whole nation in toto just because they don't like one aspect of it.

The biggest problem with his statement is not that he described these countries as "s**tholes", but that he used this a reason to look unfavorably upon immigrants from those countries. Many of us experience a condition called "compassion" in which we (1) are aware of other people's suffering even if we don't experience it ourselves (2) care about other people's suffering even if it has no direct bearing on us and (3) seek to alleviate that suffering as best we can, even if it may come at some cost to us

According to his own statement, Trump is aware of the suffering of these people and he is in a better position than most of us to help alleviate that suffering. But rather than experience compassion and use his ability to help, he wants to send them back. Oddly, he specifically cites the poor conditions of the countries as a reason to send the immigrants back. It's as if he experiences revulsion where a normal person would experience compassion. This is the hallmark of a bully.

And let's not overlook the fact that the nations he cited are largely populated by black and brown people, while in the same conversation, he (allegedly) expressed a desire for Norwegians. It's tough to avoid noticing that racism is potentially a factor in his thought process.

As for the question of whether or not it was proper to 'leak' his comment.... that's just the lowest form of lick-spittling. Trump's comments are not going to have a major effect on trade or tourism with these countries. (really lame argument, Dan!)... but his policies will.

mdh is right about one thing, though.... this is about politics. This darn well ought to be about politics, for that is the proper business of politicians, (and voters.). Trump's comment was impolitic. It has annoyed foreign nations, it has degraded the prestige of the US and it may affect the lives of many people. It is not wrong for the voters to want to be informed and use that information to pick our representatives. That's what politics is supposed to be. Politics is supposed to be informed voters picking their representatives based on issues and values. If you don't want that, go live in a monarchy or a dictatorship.

Used to be, conservatives claimed to understand that. But lately it seems they need everything explained to them.

    Agreed, except for one thing.

Quite a few of the most genuinely democratic nations in the world are constitutional monarchies. I'm not sure the USA can really be counted as one of those nations, though. It looks a lot like an oligarchy.

Excellent point, I'm sorry to say.

LJ's post was a good one, though I think Trump's racism is more overt than he described - but when it comes to Trump, that's just a quibble.

ljb5's argument is reinforced by this:
    From the Times: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/n...tish-qhgl2v80s

A Whitehall source told The Times that the decision came after the president was left smarting over rows including a rebuke from the prime minister when he appeared to endorse a far-right group. “I don’t think anyone believes this is an issue of policy or divergence between our countries,” the source said. A US diplomatic source said that “concerns about the optics” were “part of the menu” of issues worrying the White House.
