    Default Projects from the past

I have a few pictures that I thought would be interesting to share. The first pictures are from my first boat building job working for "Chummy" in Bernard Me. I was there for a year or so and as I recall we built 4 boats. Three work boats and a steam launch, (which there are no pictures).

The above pictures are on launch day. This boat is 36' or 38' LOD and 12 beam.

This boat is the same size as the first boat. The cabin is a traditional style. Standing next to the boat is Chummy, Mark Wells is facing the boat and I'm on the ladder.

    Nice. How long ago?

"Chummy" Robert Rich's shop was an old coal shed used by the USN when they had a fleet in Frenchman's Bay. The whole shop was over the water. One day in February on a new moon the tide came into the building and left 2" of ice on the floor. This is a poor picture but i'm pretty sure that the white triangle on the floor is ice.

Do you know if those boats are still around?

No, not at all. They would be 35 years old and used hard. A lot of the boats built by Chummy and his father are still around, but I'm not sure many of them are work boats.

I recently found this documentary on Chummy. I haven't been active in boat building or repair for 25 years so I've lost contact with most of what's been going on. I found it interesting to watch the process we used when I was there.

This boat is a 50' Elco built in 1930. The first part of the project required removing and replacing the old keel as well as the stem and knee. I wanted to replace the entire stem but was held back at the time only to replace it later.

Wow. The Daystar is still working out of my harbor. Green harbor in Marshfield, Mass. Chummy Rich also built my brothers boat now called the Pheonix. In our harbor we have about 7 rich built boats. I'm replacing rails and the deck this winter.

Great looking boats! It’s always nice to see some real boatbuilding, thanks.

Unfortunately I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked. Working on the boats didn't leave time for documentation of the projects. It wasn't a priority at the time.

The boat was moved from Mort Decklman's Long Cove Marina to an indoor shed at Lankford Bay Marina owned by Doug Edwards. In this picture we have started pulling her apart.

In this picture we have a few new pieces installed. As I remember we moved the steering station from the center of the pilot house to the side so we would have more room below for galley arrangement. The companion way on these boats was where we moved the steering station. The way it came to us, galley space was used up by the companion way coming down the port side. By moving the companion way to the center we gained the entire port side of the galley for equipment and cabinets.

We replaced everything eventually except the hull planking and ribs. These pictures are of the new mahogany raised panel cabin sides. All the edges were bedded in poly-sulfide. I had replaced the top of the stem, as can be seen in the pictures.

Most of the hull, deck and cabin are finished at this point. All the mechanical's new engines, genset and tanks had been replaced prior to this point.

This Lady Ellen near completion. Almost everything has been replaced top to bottom. Teak decks, teak parquet in the cabin and pilot house. Double pane glass in the pilot house, 12v air conditioning, completely new interior fore and aft cabins and galley.

Only two. Ray Noyce had it built. He retired a few years ago. Now a younger son of a fisherman owns it. Ray kept it up. New owner does as well. Here's a picture of Ray and his crew after catching a tuna.

This is my brothers boat. Built in the 70s. I think the original name was the Sara Jean. It had a fire with the first owner.

    Thanks,
That last boat appears to have a lot of rake to stem. Reminds me of a Beal's Island boat.

26 years have passed since I restored her, now I found the Lady Ellen for sale in Annapolis Md. I'm just posting a link to her sales page. A lot of the interior work we did hasn't changed and some has be altered. http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1930...s#.WlFLnN-nHIU

I found a few pictures to add to this thread. This pic is another of Chummy's boat shop. It gives a better idea of the size of the building. The tools we had were simple devices. I believe the man on the left is Ray Noyce the owner having the boat "Day Star" built. Jim Moore is standing on the right who worked on and off for Chummy. When he was off he was diving for scallops.

    Lady Ellin
I think she's about finished in the last picture, it's 1988. We sent all the deck hardware out to be chromed. I never cared for the dinghy being up top but no one who mattered wanted it on the deck.
