Just took on a project of putting some masts in this schooner. Working with what I have here , a pair of solid heavy masts from other boats.

Sounds like fun.
Looking forward to this.
That beats raking leaves, sure.
What color are their hands now?
Do you think the added weight of the solid spars will make it necessary to raise the water line? I do love double enders! Who's design? Makes me think, a little, of LFH.

She is a Cowhorn. The original builder worked from a small drawing of lines and maybe basic offsets. Her original rig had massive larch spare, gone to termites. So, not so much more weight. The spars are not top notch , so I wanted to make the rig more snug. I will put a 40 ' main and a 35 ' fore. The owner is keen on trying dyneems shrouds. I aim to rig the spars with only 2 shrouds each side , far apart.
This is gonna be cool to see come together. Thank you for sharing, Bruce.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.
Fore Step, gotta tune it up a bit.

Both mast steps have 2 inch deep keys, or whatever ya call em.
I cannot tolerate that, so the bottoms have been bottomed out.
Sooo, I chiseled out 2 inches more. There will be a substantial drain soon.
Also, bolstering up the sides to eventually get married to the frame next door.

Main mast step.vessel has a complete keelson, a giant nog of purple heart on TOP of the massive floors. It functions as the actual step.
I will dig this deeper as well, all the way through,so the key out the bottom of the mast will be closer to 5 inches than 2 inches.
Nice to see a change in cordage for the rigging gang! I thought she was almost but not quite a Herreshoff "Didiakai".

Jay, The OB( original builder), fussed a LOT , about getting what he wanted. I am tickled that you like her.Cowhorns were,as I'm sure you know, lightweight boats for their time.
This boat is not light . She has the scantlings of a 60 foot schooner.
So,The freestanding thing ...not so much cuz she is crazy heavy.
Hybrid fer shebr /> bruce
Is it because she was originally a freestanding rig that you only go with 2 shrouds? What I really mean is how come no cap shroud even with the mast. I can see how that would work, just not what I'd expect..
Are those square footages on the sails? ~500 seems a bit light for that big heavy boat, although I know winds are pretty strong down there.
If you insist on no spreaders and only two chainplates per side per mast, you could also add two intermediate shrouds that go to the same chainplates as the uppers. Its not perfect, but would allow you to go with a bit more height in the masts.
It looks like a gaff rig, but will have to be taller and that leaves me nervous. Or maybe it won't have to be taller if the reduced area is okay with your skipper.
Maybe I'm thinking this boat is bigger than it actually is.

Shes 35' long and 12 foot o beam.5 ish feets deep.
As soon as I typed it I thought I was wrong / unclear. Wrong because all the shrouds are going to the mast cap.
'normal' / standard bermudan rigs having a cap shroud to the mast head ( usually bang in line with the mast partners), and one or two lower shrouds spread out at the base to various extent. (Lower shrouds going to spreaders height normally)
So I have my own lack of experience with a heavy , near freestanding rig saying to me ' hey ,where's the in line shroud' ,and the Bruce can do it side of my behind the eyes storage device saying 'hmmm, interesting.'
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Wiz - looks like a very fun project. Nice to see you keeping busy. Maybe we wont have to assemble bail money THIS winter?

Cool. Thanks for posting.
Is she one of these https://www.allatsea.net/julian-putl...orn-schooners/
Does that slot have a drain Bruce ?
and as for the mast mast jumping out, how about a cross pin through step and tenon?
