Default An Island in the Chesapeake ~ Marsh Sailing in November

It's almost Winter, even here on the Chesapeake. Trees are bare, frost on the ground in the mornings, fire in the wood stove.

Just before Thanksgiving we spent a week on an isolated island teetering between the marshes of Mathews County and the Bay. I'll be posting a series about the trip. Too beautiful not to share.

Winter Harbor ~ Ghosting Up the Canal

Sailing on just a breath of wind up the narrow hand dug canal to the only house on the island.
So narrow the sail swept the tips of the sawgrass. This was just the first day.

This is the first lesson ye should learn: There is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, it doesn't behoove any of us to speak evil of the rest of us.

Sweet! I have done plenty of thin water winter sailing in a Melonseed, it's sublime.
I've had my dory out this month as well, maybe again this week. I overdid the marsh aspect though, and bumped the rudder out of it's gudgeons.

I have new scratches on the bottom. Nice the oysters are showing signs of coming back, but oh how that crunching sound makes you sit up and pay attention.

Great stuff. I lived not far from there, many years ago. Down in Hampton / Buckroe Beach. Did a lot of sea kayaking around there.

I was able to find the house on Google maps with the satellite view. Interesting place.

    Merry Christmas,

Nice, Barry. Your photos are, as ever, fantastic. Love that area and the marshes around Winter Harbor.

Hope we can get out for some sailing soon! Or a beer, since the weather is about to become uncooperative.

    Cheers -

Lovely spot. What is the tower for? A windmill or beacon?

There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

From the link... "The old water tower still stands sentry. The tank and windmill long gone, but in their place an osprey nest and if you climb the rusty ladder to the top, there is a stunning 360 degree view over the marshes to the west, and the Bay to the east from horizon to horizon."

    I know, right?
Ridiculous. It shouldn't be that hard.

Thanks for this thread--I love marsh sailing, though around here it's fresh water.

Sometimes I wonder why I still live in a state where all the water ices over in November. If it weren't for that inconvenient fact, I'd still be sailing.

Thank you for cruelly ripping out my heart. I love your pictures but they remind me that I am stuck by family obligations in Washington state. Puget Sound is no substitute for the Chesapeake Bay and the Straits of Juan de Fuca are a nasty stretch of water for small craft. Consider yourself lucky beyond measure.

It's snowing now, so some holed-up-in-the-cabin reading material in these entries. Too many photos to post them all (full disclosure, none them boats).
