Meet the Man Who Has Lived Alone on This Island for 28 Years (ARTICLE LINK)

Image: Sunlight drenches Morandi's porch, where he likes to dine and read during the summer.

    Excerpt
In 1989 on a stretch of water between Sardinia and Corsica, with a crippled engine and anchor adrift, Morandi’s catamaran was gripped by these same inexorable forces and carried to the shores of Budelli Island. When he learned that its caretaker was retiring from his post in two days, Morandi —long disenchanted with society—sold the catamaran and took his place.

He has lived alone on the island for the past 28 years.

Hope the voyage is a long one.
May there be many a summer morning when,
    with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time...

That archipelago is paradise-like, and one hotel on the largest island was pointed out to me as having a 5 year waiting list for a room (or was it for one of their beach huts?). Conde Naste Traveler put a different spin on this man as only a part time resident with a non-stop island social life in the summer and tied in to a Milan gallery. Big deal he has 20-40 day stints alone - I find after 14 days of zero human contact (neither sight nor sound) one is uplifted to a higher level of tranquil satisfaction. He is discussed near end of http://www.cntraveller.com/recommend...sardinia-italy . I used to consider C.N.T. junky media until I saw how low National Geographic (O.P. link) sunk at the last election cycle - broadcasting romanticized new age myths via lengthy propagandistic documentaries.

P.S. I believe Mussolini was briefly imprisoned on that larger island and the nazi commandos snooped around there before finally liberating him from a mainland ski resort. Until recently there was a NATO sub base there. Oh, and Garibaldi stayed nearby before and after he led the independence and integration of Italy. So not a forgotten set of islands.

William Garden lived on an Island off of BC for many years. He called it "Toads Landing". He was very productive, had many visitors, a welcoming smile and ran a one man boat yard.

Thanks for the link to the video of Garden at Toad's Landing, Jay! That made my day.
