There is no way these radical boats are an attempt to appeal to the mainstream sailor. It's more likely they tested the concept, figured they could make it work, and figured being ahead of the curve would help them win their first defense.

Perhaps they just figured that the hybrid winged thing had gone about as far as it was going and that getting back to something like a sailboat was a good idea.

Cost saving had already been tried, by stepping down in size from the 70 to the 50 footers and in any case AC competition has mostly been about attracting personalities who are prepared to be big spenders....as long as they find it rewarding.

We could possibly see a return to something grand, with clouds of sail and money spent more on the crew than on geek appeal.

I'm told that the return to monos was a part of the contract should TNZ win.

Contract with who? And why would someone stipulate that?

Petrozia Bertelli !, he of Luna Rossa/Prada fame, who has apparently been helping TNZ, and a scan of his background shows him to be someone with good business sense.
He is a sailor that is fond of classic craft, as wells having refined taste and time for culture.

Perhaps he figures that if he really wants to move fast with wings, he may as well go by plane instead of mess with an altitude challenged hybrid.
