    Default Leather for spars

I would like to buy leather to protect rub points on the spars of my Caledonia Yawl. Can someone tell me what type of leather I should use as well as the best thickness? Also, it would be helpful to have some recommendations on sources for this leather.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I would use latigo leather and I usually buy leather from "The Leather Guy" in Minnesota. He sells nice stuff at decent prices. Maybe 8 oz.- 9 oz. which is sort of a sturdy medium weight, or 10 oz. to 12 oz. if you want something really heavy duty.

Another source for "Latigo Red" leather is, Tandy's". I found it, by accident, one day when I was looking for another kind of hide. It is oil tanned and the half hide I bought was beautiful and thick! Great Stuff! Good Latigo Red is oil cured and highly water resistant. It is the only thing to use for oar leathers.

Just drop by the local saddle store and get a half hide.

Or for oar leathers, see if they have a suitable piece of scrap Latino in the scrap bin.

You can get a really good leathering kit, includes wax, tallow, thread, needles, punches and leather, from these guys. I've used one of their kits, top quality.

They do both spar kits and oar leather kits.
