This does seem a little bit of a password search.

My take is that if you poke someone with a sharp stick they'll get annoyed, if you smile and shake their hand they will be your friends.

My parents have had the same number since 1955.
They're the only people I know that still have a land line.

HU6-1128, for the house... WA5-1773 or WA5-1774, for my Dad's business. 'HU' and 'WA' represent 'Hunter' and 'Wabash', back when exchanges had names, presumably to make them easier to remember.

We had a private line... but I recall that a pair of close neighbors shared a 'party line'... two houses, separate numbers, but only one could use the line, at a time... it provided a cheaper rate. Those are LONG gone.

When I first moved to VT in the mid-70's I was on a 12 party line - my ring was 2 short & one long. Even had the classic little old lady who listened in to most everyone's calls. Saying "Hi Bertha!" got her to hang up though... A couple of years later it went down to 4 party, then 2, then I was finally offered a private line. Yes the party line was cheaper - but they didn't have enough lines to offer single party until the late 70's. At that time, the phone lines weren't even on poles, but strung along farmer's fenceposts on the side of the road. If the farmer allowed the phone company to run the cable along his posts, he got free phone - party line of course.

Bryant Pond, ME had the last hand cranked with an operator phone system in the US - it ended (IIRC) in the 1980's.

Mine is still the same number. Mom is alive and well in the house I grew up in. I dial it all the time. ( Actually, I don't dial it;I use speed dial)

3728722. I donít remember the area code. Perhaps thatís because in the day we didnít need to use it, plus, area codes got reshuffled about the the time we needed to dial all 10 digits. It was the Merrimack valley Massachusetts.

I still Iíll have those rotary dial phone nightmares too, the one where I screw up with one digit from the end and have to start over.
