Ooh, I like that one, too! Excellent.

I am unsure if any of you have ever seen my doodling, but I can also do circles by hand. Straight lines, too. I have to actually try, but itís not too hard. Octagons And hexagons are kindof hard, but pentagrams, pentagons, an squares are easy. I can hit 90* exactly fairly often, too, by hand.
Once youíve done it about 1,000,000,000 times, itís easy.

    Peace,
    Robert

I've been doing a huge 'shed'/paint shop out back.

Using a LOT of recycled lumber.

My old trim carpenter chops are coming back strong.

I often pick up a board, square one end in the miter saw, then it needs to be, say, 113 3/8", so I slide that puppy over to mark and cut the other end.

Quite often, that initial slide stops within a quarter inch of the cut.

Sometimes it is dead nuts ON the yet-to-be-inscribed mark.

    Sorta scary, even.

I can measure 30mm and 50mm to within +/- 0.1mm (0.004”) by eye. I am working in an engineering college and they are make plates this size. I have seen so many in has become a knack. Drills, rod bolts etc can be identified to similar accuracy.

Use the rule to plot graph paper and the using r^2= x^2 + y^2 plot x and y values to create your circle.

Rub the wood of the rule together to create a fire, char some of the wood to create charcoal. Create paper from some more of the rule - no going to detail that. Holding the charcoal in between finger and thumb press little finger down into the centre of the paper. Rotate the paper with your free hand and a circle will appear.

yes I am getting a bit silly but you keep sending us your storms limiting my activities

I cut rabbets with a rebate plane, in either language!
If the handle is in the vertical position the hammer head is horizontal in or most cases square to the SHAFT.

I surmise you call a rule a ruler.

Still trying to get my head around " I was taught that a maul, regardless of size, is a strking tool with the business end in line with the handle".

    Sounds like a poss stick?

Never heard the handle of a hammer called the shaft, but OK

As a rule I refer to a rule as a rule and not a ruler.

If you look at what some people call a carver's mallet; those nifty clubby little things, you can see that the head is in line with the shaft/handle. My mentor insisted that that is a maul. He used a much bigger verson for striking a steel wedge when splitting wood. Just as effective and easier on the arms a nd hands than using a steel headed sledge.

Never heard of a poss stick

I rest my case your honor.......

You can tell the Germans, and you can tell the Dutch, and you can tell the English, but you can't tell them much!

    OOOH, visual aids!

The English confuse speaking english with the "English Language", ne'er the two shall meet. I buy finish nails at the hardware store. Nick probably buys panel pins at the ironmonger.

That last big wooden one is called a "Commander" where I come from

The dictionaries suggest that an axe might. However haft is much more common.
