Yes. I’m sure there are other ways. I just thought to share mine.

How about making mini-beam compass from a piece of scrap? Pushpin, brad, etc. in the center then drill a 1/16" hole for a sharp pencil at the required radius. Carefully swing the pencil around and Bob's yer uncle.

A piece of string and a nail works well.

Bit he only has a ruler. Now if he had a drill as well, he could turn the ruler into a beam compass.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Or how about going over to your neighbor's with your ruler, and tell him you'll trade it to him for a can of soup.

While ingenious, and undoubtedly functional, these helpful suggestions miss the mark. Needing to draw a circle clearly indicates a need for a compass. Where do you get a compass? The hardware store, or on-line equivalent. While there he would have the opportunity to also get another tool he did not even know he needed, maybe a marking gauge for the thickness the jaws, or a hole saw set to drill out the opening in the jaws. By extension one can see that needing one tool can be a catalyst for important augmentation of one's workshop.

Well, I COULD have walked the twelve steps to grab any one of a dozen real and actual compasses (not the drunk pirate kind, the scribing, drawing kind), but I had the ruler right there.

And, I know the circle is really 2”, and it took about 32 seconds to do. I am VERY lazy.

    Peace,
    Robert

P.S. Looks like the crook is going to work. Going to rough them out, and if they survive that and look good, I’ll split and finish them. The spars are all gotten out in the rough. The mast needs tapered yet, and they all need cut to length.

That is EXACTLY 2”? This took less time than reaching any of my neighbor’s doors.

Well, you're changing the rules! You didn't say in the opening post that you were looking for a specific diameter, now, did you?

Besides, with my approach, you get lunch, too.

If you only had a ruler, where'd you get the pencil?

My ex's father was a commercial artist. He could freehand a circle and mark the centre. You could check it with a compass and would need a magnifier to find any error.

With a bit of origami, neither ruler nor pencil are needed.

    Dave,

That's not a circle. That's a dodecagon! ( When was the last time you used that word in a sentence?)

Seriously, that is very cool, and, in many instances would get the job done just fine.

So are my spars as they take shape, but it's nothing a plane and some sandpaper can't fix.

Well, they’re still rough, but this is why the fuss. I just needed to make a quick circle while I was picking through knees and such to see if it would fit on the piece I needed.

I simply used an old trick I know to make one.

    Carry on.

You do not even have a ruler, you have a President, we have a ruler she, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. You do have a rule though.

On a similar note a compass is the thing that points north. The device for marking circle is a pair of compasses

I am sure the Queen has a pair of compasses and can draw your circle.

I do wind my students up when they as for a ruler, “you have one”........ eventually I tell them she is in
    London.

I am frequently telling them where North is also.

Yes I agree the terminology is rule it irritates me when it is presented as ruler. Pedantic I know, but it indicates a greenhorn to me.

It is a rule, not a ruler
Its a plane, not a planer
But is it a pair of compasses or a pencil divider?
Is it a sabersaw or a jigsaw?
Is it a maul or a mallet?
Theres no such thing as a power saw
Its a bottom bearing bit even if its in a router table and the bearing is up
    Its a backsaw, period
If you cant put two hands on the handle its just a big chisel
Planes have totes and knobs, they do not have handles
Is it a rabbet or a rebate?

    End of rant.....

But is it a pair of compasses or a pencil divider? No such animal as a pencil divider. Apart from a saw or hatchet.
Is it a sabersaw or a jigsaw?
Is it a maul or a mallet? Depends on its size. A maul is a Bigly two handed wooden hitting stick.

I’m not sure if you’re serious. Lots of comedy, here.

It was a 2” circle, so a line with a center mark, then one mark 1” either side. After that, it is simply a mater of putting a mark on the center dot, and making a mark 1” either side.

I start at roughly 90* to the line, making a cross, then fill in between.

    Peace,
    Robert

That would be funnier if your Queen did anything except leech off the commoners. What does she rule, then?

My old navigation teach said if you can draw a perfect circle without a pair of compasses you where mad - and then frequently did

I got this recently. No telling how long it sat in some back room before I got it. Still in the box with the special paper and all. I was very excited to find it. No more chisel wedged into a block of wood. Well... Not all the time.

It don’t flatten rabbits worth a squirt.
