A week before I'd took the decision to do my self a favour.
To have a solo weekend campcruising, sail and oar style.
The decision was triggered because I had to do drop my father off at a pick up point for his weeklong hiking vacation.
The pick up point was not far from the river schelde, so that kind of sorted my launch location.

Now the schelde is a rather big river delta in Belgium and Holland.
    IMG_1585.jpg
The Westerschelde is open to sea and tide and leads to one of Europe's bigger ports "Antwerp"

There are a other deltabranches dammed of from the sea. To keep the lowlands from flooding.
Branches like the Veerse meer, the Grevelingen meer,... have no tides because of this.

The Oosterschelde has a "stormvloedkering" a storm protection System to protect the lowlands from flooding during a 50year storm. But the Oosterschelde has tides because iTs semi open to sea.

It was low tide when I launched @ schelphoek.
There's A nice big ramp and a rope between trailer and car made it uneventfull.

First some rowing between the caisson - leftovers from the construction of the "stormvloedkering"

Felt a zephyr, hoisted sail and was off.

The tide was filling in and what wind there was came from behind. Current in conjunction with wind made for a relaxed ride.

Now it was not my first time a the schelde delta, nor @ the oosterschelde.
But it was the first time I went with the intention to dry out and camp out.

2 Seals wore curiosly following along.

Amazed by the playfull folow alongs.
I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the channel markers.
When all of a sudden I heard a grinding noise.
My centerboard touched bottom, and not long after the rudder too
    WP_20170930_09_21_31_Pro (2).jpg
After some scrambling about, I managed to raise them.
And drifted happily along in some 20cm of water.

I was about where my pencil points at, right above the Roggeplaat.
A bit later the shallows got shallower but I managed to steer clear and keep moving.
    Lovely Fauna on the sandbanks.

A week before the forecast had looked so good.
Winds of 3 to 4 Bft. sunshine etc....
During the week leading up to the weekend the forecast got worse and worse.

Passing beautiful zierikzee (no time to stop @ de gekroonde suikerbiet this time)
I lashed the tiller to put on raingear, headed for the Zeeland bridge.

I was turning northward in to "mastgat" when traffic increased.
The locks of Bruinisse and Krammer must have opened together.
Some 30 yachts where tacking towards me, and with them 4 huge "rijnvaarders" full steam.

My boat on the Roggeplaat in 1995.

A lot has changed since. We sail the Eastern Med since 2001, full time liveaboard. Boat has grown a lot, I have shrunk. The boat now has a longer bowsprit with Jib boom at the end for a roller gennaker, has a much larger lugsail at the back.

Sailed the Schelde delta for a decade, liked it very much. Lots to gather. On that same Roggeplaat I went often collecting “Kokkels” ( Cerastoderma edule ) and a bit west at Burgsluis we often collected mossels ( blue mussel )
    Lots of fish, even eals.
Good times, even if I had to work to save the money I am now living of.

Nice boat, but mind the weather, the Oosterschelde can be very mean.

To dodge the yachts I went fort the shallows,
timed it right and crossed the channel to the shallows,
    right in to the krabbekreek.

To dry out @ the krabbekreek was my plan.
An tide was starting to run out of the krabbekreek.
After the harbour of Sint-Annaland I went for the shallows.
I was hardly making any headway when I schoald.

A minute later I was a ground and dried out, The rain stopped.

As I looked towards the "mastgat" some yachts where coming up the kreek flying huge spinnakers.
After some 10 min. And making no headway they turned around.
There I was wet but dried out, hungry and tired, alone yet enjoying every minute of it!

Now a Whiley tern is the smaller beach boat and at 15'1" and with its floatation tanks there isn't a lot of space to lounge,...

But that wasn't my biggest concern.
Altough the sun had managed to reveal itself, the Sunday forecast was turning sour.

    And there you've have it.
By Sunday morning the wind would be picking up to 5 Bft. Gusting to 7 @ the oosterschelde!

Now my tern has 2 reefs, but force 7,... not exactly my comfort zone.
Rowing against tide and waves with no way to stow the mast while rowing,... not an option
    what to do?

    Plan B:
I called my freind who was @ the veerse meer aboard his yacht.
He also had watched the forecast turn sour, and was a bit worried about my little adventure.
If he could pick me up in the morning somewhere @ the krabbekreek?
    Maybe I told him.
I could also up and leave @ midnight,
maybe get the tideride to schelphoek just before sunday morning and the increasing wind...
I'd let him know what I would do.

4 hours on the hard turned in to five.
The sun was getting low and the water didn't seem to be getting any closer.
I had an other meal and then started to drag the boat end for end towards the waters edge.

The sun had set when I reached the water.
Some shoving off and I was afloat again.
Luckily there where no clouds, and half a moon kept me out of total darkness.
I started to row to the spot that looked so promising to camp out on.
    (on google earth, that was)
    FullSizeRender[20830].jpg
Neap tide and the weather window rendered it useless.
So I rowed for the harbour.

    @ The harbour of Sint-Annaland.
    I weighed my options.
Rang my freind and asked if he could come pick me up on sunday monrning.
    Place to be confirmed.
Then I covered the cockpit as much as possible with the sail.
Sans sleepingmat (not enough place under the twarth),
    A pfd for a pillow and a t-shirt as a beanie,
    I hit the hay.
