    Default Hey Varadero.

Life has thrown you some crap recently, it would be good to know how you are doing on a day to day basis.
Made you in Ozzie, Palma or Scotland?
I never figured out whether you stopped at the Galapagos, if you did I would Love to hear your reaction more specially your childrenís reaction.
Going to the Galapagos is one of my bucket list wishes.

Was your boat insured and did you get the money.

    Thanks Gareth,
Here's what happened according to the Mail. Not a bad story, if you consider what they are capable of.

OK, that worked. I have a similar tale to tell you about a friend's cat sinking 100 miles off Guiana .... he survived too!

I am now in Brisbane, Australia. Had to come here to sort out insurance and my health. Have been diagnosed with bone metastasized prostate cancer. Start chemotherapy on 17 October, then radiotherapy on my pelvis area. Very thorough tests and scans show no problems in any organs or lymphatic system. I am now back up to 60 kg from a low of 48 a few months back. I do not see any reason to not beat the survivability estimate of 35 -50 months. Insurance has paid up in full, my wife has run off with another bloke. Life is good, and can only go uphill from here.

In a funny way I am really happy for the last two years. I could still be working dealing with this stuff, and not done the trip. I got to know my kids really REALLY well. My boy, when asked in the interview what he liked most about sailing said, "Before sailing, I saw my dad only at night time before bed. Now I get to see him all day, every day. We get to play, we get to talk, and he teaches me everything." I cried a little, and knew then I had done the right thing. As for my wife, that hurts. But I was never good at hanging out with someone who did not want to be with me.

Bobby, sorry to hear about Cheryl. Even when one sees objectively how lives change, even when two people evolve differently, appreciating and accepting that in each other, there's also loss. But as a sailor, you know that life involves risk and loss. You have given your children the best of upbringing and you will sail on.

One hell of a triple whammy. Kudos for your positive attitude.
I hope that the kids can work through the break OK.

Very best of wishes, sir. I have always kind of accepted that life is two steps forward and one step back, but it sounds as if the dance got a bit mixed up for you. I very much hope things come back in order for you.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts. My life has been a cycle of build, gain, win. Lose, struggle, bugger! Then build.... repeat. In some ways, when at the top I get nervous. And when at the bottom, I have hope. Time for hope and opportunity! I have also been living on borrowed time since 84, have not feared death or felt that I had not done my life justice. I always joked that I wanted to know when I was going to die, so I could be at my own wake. Be care full what you wish for. I have both kids with me here right now, so I will cuddle them and go to bed. More tomorrow. Any questions, shoot. You are my friends I will answer honestly. Wanna know what its like to hit a reef at 4 am at 12 knots etc...?

Hi Bobby,Gareth alerted me to the cancer development yesterday ,we were sailing down the northlland coast and Kirsty wanted to know what I was cursing at.
It takes a bit to absorb even just for someone on the outside of it all. .. my best regards and wishes to you.
I actually found that daily mail article a day or two after it came out.We just happened to be somewhere we came into coverage... Yasawa I think. I thought it was a candid and helpful interview and you told it like it was. I repeated your 12 mile zoom discovery to many other cruisers over the last month or two as the subject came up,we've all scurried back to our boats to see what our systems show. 24 miles in my case and a still name at 48 .I'd love to know what product you were using.

You sound good,Bobby, thanks for keeping us all up to date and again .. best of luck from here on too.

Truly, a most excellent adventure....... You have done what many only dream of...... Taken that step that fear keeps the many from taking...... You have
nothing to hide from........ Your children have the utmost love and respect
for you because you have loved them and showed them a life few ever see.

I envy you and applaud. Thank you for sharing this part of your life
    with us.

    Standing by.
I don't often agree with Rumy, but this is an exception, <smile> although we might have met in English Harbour, we were certainly there the same time.

As for the Galapagos islands, we did enjoy them but they were horribly expensive before you actually set foot ashore. Restrictive as to where and what you can do. Commercialised, to the point of cash exhaustion. Really a bit disappointing. When I do this trip again, which I shall, the places I will revisit, and lurk for longer, are Columbia, Atlantic Panama, Pacific Panama, the jewel in the crown is, without any doubt, the Marquesas. Words cannot do justice to the landfalls, anchoring in the Bay of Virgins, the humility and friendliness of the people, and the shear beauty of unspoiled everything.

My main system installed was raymarine c90 w, with new software March 2017 from Navionics. I also ran downloaded avionics on two separate tablets. This is the first time I have ever sailed without medium scale charts at hand. Reason being that wherever we were, all that was stocked were island groups, or large scale routing charts. Commercial vessels now run on paperless ECDIS systems, which means that even in large centres like Panama city, or Papeete, full inventories are not available. I could order them and wait 3-5 weeks, but I never new where I would be in 3-5 weeks. The irony was, that when I was hard aground, surf breaking over the stern, scaling down on the plotter, it eventually showed the reef 4 NM off to port. The only way to have guaranteed missing it, would have been to aim for it. Got to laugh.

    Hard question to ask........

Is Cheryl keeping in touch with the children?

Whatever the situation, she is still their mom, and needed
by them. Please support their relationship with her.

Damn, keep the hard questions coming. They are the important ones. Cheryl is the best mother in the world, she was the best wife I could have asked for. I start every day telling our kids how much we both love them. She will come soon, and then the hard questions and answers will come. I tell them we are still all a family, just different from before. The unknown lies ahead, where I had certainty. I am not fearful of death, but I never thought I would have to face it alone. But I have some years left to rectify that.
