    Default Canada/USA 2017

Hi.....as I mentioned as a comment in a few threads, my wife and I spent a bit of time in Vancouver before crossing the border into the USA.
I would like to share a few photos taken on that trip if you wish to see them.

One of the few disappointments of the whole trip was in Vancouver.
All the forest fires in inland British Columbia caused a smoky haze to blanket the city.
We had planned to cross by ferry to Victoria Island but didn't due to residents there being told to stay inside for health reasons.
As can be seen in this photo from the ferry to Lonsdale, we couldn't even see the mountains behind the city.

No....just the view you get from the window seat in the very last row, right in the rear of economy in an Air NZ 777.
The only thing behind us was the galley.

    Rob:

If you are on the ferry heading to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver, and looking at the downtown Vancouver - you are looking south. The mountains are in the north. North Vancouver spills up the sides of them, as far as the water supply pressure will permit. If you didn't notice the mountains to the north, while hanging out in Stanley Park or downtown, it really was smoky, but they wouldn't be in the direction you were looking when that photo was taken!

I guess you will just have to come back some day, and see Vancouver on a clear day.

Thanks for that...yes it really was that smoky. There was no view of North Vancouver at all, totally hazed out.
From Stanley Park and downtown around the waterfront you could JUST see Lonsdale Quay and the faint outline of hills behind in the haze.

We would love to return to Vancouver on a clear day, maybe a different season as well.
If we do, we hope to venture inland and see more of British Columbia, especially the lakes and mountains we know are there.

Once we settled in with our family in Seattle, we started to have a look around.
The first place we visited was Olympia (Washington State Capital).

After Olympia we decided that we wanted to do something really traditionally American.
So we went to a ballgame.
Our family booked the tickets for us as the system wouldn't seem to allow us to book and pay before we left NZ.
We watched the Seattle Mariners play the Los Angeles Angels.
They were celebrating the 300th home run by Hernandez ( 11) so gave out shirts with his name and number on it.
I will always look after that shirt.
    The Angels won 4-2.

On our last night in Seattle we went for dinner at Ivar's Fish Bar on the waterfront.
From our table we were able to watch the Ferry to either Bainbridge Island or Bremerton leave and sail into the sunset.

We left Seattle on our 2nd Amtrak train ( Empire Builder) en-route to Chicago in the late afternoon.
We climbed slowly as we proceeded up river valleys into the mountainous north east Washington State.
Please keep in mind that photos taken from the trains were taken with the train travelling between 50 & 80 MPH.
