    Thanks for the link. I read the report, skimming over many of the bureaucratic details. I think that by the time they realized they were in danger, it was too late. They never really thought they would lose the ship until the last hour. A combination of an old ship, a bad storm, somewhat lax seamanship left them with really slim odds. The ship would still be sailing had they gone west of the Bahamas again, or possibly paid more attention to water-tight integrity.

    wow. A long read but quite interesting. If I stop to think about how terrifying the end must have been, man just awful. God bless those men. sad.

    Mario Vittone, about a year ago had this, what I consider pretty scathing, but I'm sure just meant to be an honest, and truthful opinion...

    Low reduction gear lube level that became critical when she developed a list is the biggie. Plant shut down and put her beam to the seas.

    Well, those long-winded Coasties just wasted 199 pages I guess! You summed it up in 2 sentences, Bob!

    Rotten bulkheads, containers adrift, rolling cargo bobbing loose in the lower holds, mates plotting and suggesting alternate routes while the master slept, no one at the Home Office monitoring an asset sailing into the vicinity of a hurricane. other ships warning of 100 knots of wind, delayed hurricane updates. etc.
    Lots of grist for the mill, IMHO.

    Yes. As is often the case, a succession of seemingly minor errors and equipment failures led to a disaster.
    I think it is incumbent on every seaman to consider what might happen.
