Just a curiosity, is there an advantage to lifting the boat up off the ballast as opposed to lowering the ballast out from under the boat?

Mine is in the same position as Leo’s, being that it is sitting on the lead keel, so nowhere to lower it too.

It looks like some considerable renewal will have to take place and I suspect that a renaming ceremony might be appropriate...how about 'Spirit of Tally Ho' ! Joking aside, some WW2 Spitfires have been raised from the dead on the strength of only a makers name plate! No matter what percentage of wood replacement, it will not detract from the marvellous effort and enthusiasm being put into this remarkable restoration. I remain totally impressed by this man called Leo.

Hi Leo, Congratulations with 12.000 subscribers for your YouTube channel. As I wrote on another thread on this forum the films you make are well worth watching and to me much more interesting than for instance Discovery Channel. 12 K subscribers and 60 K views could give you a monthly income. Maybe it is a good idea to make one video to outline the plans you have for the boat. I know you have to take a lot of decisions regarding what materials to use and so on. What are the parts you can re-use? What are the parts you have to build again? Will you be using modern adhesives? Will you stick to the way the vessel was built originally or do you take the liberty to use more modern constructions, like laminating frames? Anyway, whatever the plans are keep up the good work!

By the way, I saw Tally Ho when I was working on a job in Brookings. She is a very, very well built boat. Those Brits can do a good job. I did not go aboard but from what I could see, she is in remarkable shape. She had work done by local marine carpenters in the small town. Their work, not surprisingly, was not as high quality as the original. But it was not awful. My guess is that the hull will be not have to be rebuilt. (I have restored boats that came to be 85% new wood.)
It's going to be a huge job...I hope Leo gets additional help and is showered with dollars. The boat deserves saving.

I could've done. I crewed very briefly on a big (power) yacht right out of high school but ended up going to college instead. Two roads diverged and all that.

I'm still curiously waiting for a response to my original question as to how much solid and sound timber will remain of the hull? Im assuming a survey of the hull has been done (at least by now with the interior laid well and truly bare).

I take my hat of to you Leo, Brave man to take a boat that size on, I have watched the vids & enjoyed them.
Regarding that keel, its full of huge splits & shakes, the ones along the top look like they join up between the keelbolts? I never worked on many wooden boats that size but i wouldnt trust that keel & would replace it. One thing is sure if you dont replace it the worry will always be there, & it will be a minus if you ever sell her. Above all do you want the niggle in the back of your mind " should i have replaced it?" when you are driving her hard to windward in a blow offshore?
One other thing i would say, you need to be a bit more safety concious, Grinders with no switch? Grinders take no prisoners, chuck it in the bin. And that ladder. If i sound like a H&S freak so be it but i busted my arm 35 years ago doing something similar & im still paying for it.
Lot of angle grinder cutting going on & jets of hot sparks in an old wooden boat are a recipe for fire. Have a bucket or two of water handy or a fire extinguisher even a squeezy bottle where you are grinding.
Example, last week i was burning paint off a 14ft clinker dinghy, being careful no dust or shavings, the torch set a spark going at the plank gains near the transom & it started smoking 5 minutes after i had stopped, Squirted water on it & 5 minutes later it started smoking again, More water & all ok.
We dont want to see a video of a pile of smoking ashes cos she caught fire.

Bernadette, In the hull, possibly 80% of the planking, the beam shelves, and one bilge stringer. As to the keel, he has acquired purpleheart for keel replacement. We will likely see that nixt time, then he has to take a break for a while before being back at it.

Does Leo intend to replace the entire keel or only a portion of It? I hope he replaces the entire keel, an old section will doom the boat again in the near future. A whole new keel could last another 100 years. Go for the rudder post and horn timber as well.

Leo answered this question pretty thoroughly in the last video. He also talked about why he is rebuilding an historic boat instead of building new from scratch.

I thought it it was pretty cool to see Alex’s bronze anchor on the bench during the Port Townsend Foundry segment.
