It takes a bit of time to do. Get a smaller needle. Blunt the end so it does not pierce the lay of the line.

My other hobby is Z 1:220 German Model trains. Here is a module of a water tank and a freight locomotive that is ready to take on water. Z scale is pretty small, the track is 6.5mm wide or 1/4". The dead branch on the tree is a piece of spagnum moss. The green boughs are sphagnum as well.

I should add, too, that the “needle” I made has a sort of duckbill shape to the tip. It’s not a cone, but,a sor of flattened cone. Like a fid, as it were.

That is BRILLIANT! Those things are popular in our home, and easy to lose, apparently. Wonderful gifts. And nicely made, it looks.

Well, the lanyard, not the cannon...

Biggest trick is having the footrope knot use four of the eight lines to lock the whole thing together. Maybe I'll do a tutorial on it.

View of star knot at end which fits between fingers and provides a strong point to "tug" the firing pin.

    StarKnot-20171227_222722.jpg

The knot is deceptive... it won't fit thru the shackle but it works for display by tucking thru a loop of the lanyard and then evening the loops. Could almost be a rope puzzle except that the other side shows exactly how it works.

WHY was that particularly important to show? Damfino, but the back meds are REALLY working well.

Yeah, you need to. I took a basic Winchster 10ga cannon I inherited and built it a swivel "stock" so that it'll mount in one of Bucephalus's oarlock sockets, but it really, *really* needs a better lanyard than just a length of seine twine finished with a split ring:

One of these days, I will get around to making a proper firing lanyard. For now there is just a star knot on the bitter end. This is a ten gauge 1915 B&H starting gun that I rescued from a box of junk in pieces. Somer parts were missing and had to be made; breech lock pin and firing pin are new. We started the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend for nearly ten years with it.

Unfortunately I did not take a photo of the last project, a cherry casket for a dead dogs ashes.
However discussion on another thread prompted me to make over my Granddad's seaming palm.

It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

For a while I made stone sculpture, bowls and vases from granite and marble. These are all about 20" across the disk.

My buddy, Ward Vance has a vintage Kamaka soprano ukulele that had belonged to his mother since 1949. Due to a broken bridge, a bad nut and various cracks, it was unplayable. So I fixed it for Ward. Here is what went on to put it back in playable shape.
The various cracks in the front and back were repaired by forcing hot hide glue into the cracks followed by scraping the old finish off and sanding the wood smooth. Mother of pearl fret board marker dots were installed and the board was taped off as was the area of the broken bridge. The original makers label was removed and photo copied as it was badly torn and discolored. The tuning peg holes were reamed to the correct taper to accept ebony violin pegs. The instrument was given a French polish finish using violin polish as it contains lavender spike oil and other oils as well to increase the mellowness of the wood vibrations since the use is made of Philippine Mahogany a wood that has a tendency to sound tinny if not finished with the right coating. A new bridge of mahogany and bone was copied from my Martin 5K soprano and glued on with hot hide glue. After installing the new label that was dated and signed by Ward and me, the Kamaka was strung up and played with much gusto. It has a nice tone!

Way to go, Jay. And, though we've seen it here on the WBF many times, I have to say, " nice bench," once again.

Well Rob, the Kamaka family makes good sounding ukes but this one now soundes better than it originally did due to the violin polish that I used on it. "White sandy beaches" is one of my favorirte songs.

I use those binocular glasses for ultra fine work. They are the same as surgeons and dentists use and are set for my working focal length of seventeen inches from eye to the work. They enlarge 4 to one and are made by Surgitel. They also have a fiber optic light incoroporated as an added aid.

This is a very interesting thread, very impressive projects. I'll throw some of mine into the mix. Beyond the house projects I enjoyed building some toys for my kids, nephews and nieces for a spell. Even one for my Dad who ordered a Peterbilt for his birthday some years ago. I cut the large wheels for the small tractors and bought the others for the fronts and the all the wheels on the trucks everything else was made from Poplar planks. I built a couple toy boxes as well for both my kids, backwards engineered the two of them from pictures I found. Both are still holding up well and still residing in their bedrooms.
