I have had and used my own planimeter for more years than I care to admit. It is simple to use so I don't see why I should bother to change. Besides it is a work of engineering art from a bygone era. It is an old friend that makes me happy.

Computer aided design can be a real help compared to older methods, if you are willing to become pretty good at a given program.
But too many young guys at work thought it would make up for not really knowing what they were doing engineering wise or drafting wise.

Older methods often force you to understand what you are doing - which is really good.

I've had too many young guys turn in a CAD design which couldn't possibly be manufactured, or simply violated the requirements of the part.

On the other hand, someone who knows their engineering/ design principles and their CAD system, can turn out something quicker with more precision.
You don't often need 0.001 precision - particularly on small boats.

    There is room for both.

Probably really true for a concrete canoe.
