Getting into trouble one board at a time.
look at those clamps! never can have too many!! Nicely done, Figo!
Figo, Just bumped into your build. Looking good! I restored an 18 a few years back. Had a 35 Honda on it. That was almost too much hp. My hull porpoised above about 15 mph. so I had to keep some weight up front. Eventually put wedges at the stern. Also, it's not a stable boat just sitting so keep all weight possible as low as possible. It's a fun boat and where it really shows it's heritage is in a good chop or bouncing over a "trying to break" wave. Get to the Georgetown SC show when you can. There are always some nice Simmons' there.
keep at it,
Glenn

Yes, there are usually more there. Mine was the Caledonia Yawl (red hull). Good show and good BBQ at the banquet! Glenn H.
Not the one the wind blew off its stand was it? I don't remember exactly what that one was.

figo,
There is a wooden boat show in the fall in Southport, NC. I believe it is the first weekend in November this year. Many SSS's there every year. They even have a 'Best of Simmons' award.

Thanks for the info! I can't make it this year but I will keep it on my list!

She's looking so nice! So veeeerrrrry nice!
Hello,
I have been researching the forums on SSS18. This thread stopped on 01/04/18. Anyone have an update? Looked like things were progressing well. My father and I are about to send our Simmons 18 build to paint and was curious if anyone has suggestions on specific colors that might have been preferred by Simmons.
Thanks

Wow! i've been gone awhile! I was having some trouble with a couple of things mostly design elements. I was struggling with weather to go with a center console or just go with tiller stearing. I've decided on tiller. The other thing was the transom top edge, it was just 3/4" plywood and didn't really match up well with the decking i installed so I finally used a 1" piece of Mahogany laminated to it and shaped then installed knees in the corners, looks much better. So I'm semi retired now, only working about 18 hours a week and the weather is cooling off a little. Hopefully I will start making progress again, I would like to launch this coming spring.

Figo, very nice build. What made you decide on a tiller? Will you use an extension and a grab post for standing? Or steer from back aft. Just curious, as I've fooled around with tiller steer ideas on several boats.

I'm a big guy and all the Simmons I've seen list to the side of the wheel. I considered center console but I could not come up with a design I like. All in all the whole design delima was holding up production. I will probably need a tiller extension but for now I am going to mount a restored 1968 Merc 200 and see how that works.

You have all winter to figure it out and get her ready for spring! Looks amazing.
