Default A vague memory of an article around 1984?

I'm looking for a particular article in Wooden Boat that was published around 1984 or 85' or 83' perhaps about a boat builder who was building small canoes and such. I think the article outlined his designs and boat building shop. The photo that stands out in my mind was a picture of him sitting in a very small canoe pretending to be paddling while he was in tall grass in a field. I have searched the Wooden Boat archives for hours but I am unable to source anything because this is about all that I remember. I just don't have much else to go on. I would very much appreciate any help if you remember that article. Thank You!

You are not thinking of The Survival of the Birch Bark Canoe by John McPhee in the NYer.

What was the construction method? Lapstrake? Cedar Strip? Traditional cedar and canvas? Etc... That would help narrow things down.

I think it was showcasing a builder who used plywood lap strake construction to build very small and light weight canoes and boats. I am not positive about that. I wished I could remember more. The reason this is important to me is that single article changed my life direction as a young man who had just lost his Dad. Thanks for trying to help me find it!

Sounds like Tom Hill. Could it be the article "Three Friends" in #54, Sept/Oct 1983?

Man that picture looks familiar, but I'm not sure if that's the article. I could have sworn he was in a small one-man canoe with a paddle in tall grass in a field. Time is quickly stealing my memories... A heartfelt thanks for the tip!

I just finished reading the article. I could see how it might be inspirational to a fellow at a certain point in his life.

I smiled to see the next article too: it's about Ken Bassett and I have read that one before because I am going to build one of his boats one day. I wonder if that's the one you are really looking for.

Either way this issue is worth the digital download. It must be the Boating New England Pastures issue.

That's it! The article about Tom Hill! I just purchased a digital download from the Wooden Boat Store and took a look at the article "Three Friends" and a flood of memories came back to me. As a 23 year old lost young man who happened upon that article, it gave me the inspiration I needed to actually start using my head and hands instead of using other body parts! LOL Again my absolute heartfelt thanks for those who chipped in and researched this for me. You folks are great folks!

Curious yes, but never take sail trim advice from one.

When I finished the Mac's rig we put up the sails in the driveway on it's trailer and had afternoon tea on board.
