Default Biggest amateur-built sub sinks—owner is suspected of killing passenger

Hope the voyage is a long one.
May there be many a summer morning when,
    with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time...

    Stranger and stranger
Danish police believe that a submarine at the centre of an investigation into a missing Swedish journalist was deliberately sunk.
Kim Wall, 30, was last seen on Thursday evening on board the vessel with the owner, 46-year-old Peter Madsen.
The submarine later sank and Mr Madsen was rescued before being arrested and charged with manslaughter.
The stricken vessel, the Nautilus, has been raised but no body was found and the search for Ms Wall goes on.

Beginning to resemble a Clive Cussler novel.

The captain has now explained that there was an accident aboard the sub and that he held a burial at sea.
He's charged with involuntary manslaughter with aggravating circumstances (my translation).
There's been an in camera hearing where he's explained to the court what has occurred.

Yesterday, the body of a woman was found in Danish waters in the vicinity of where the accident is supposed to have happened.
The press reports it as a mutilated body and the police cannot confirm the identity of the woman.

Just what the heck happened aboard the Nautilus!?

This is really strange, Peter Madsen is kind of a Danish folk hero, a more or less self-taught inventor. Think Gyro Gearloose without the hat.
Beside the sub he's built, he's also building Denmark's first spacecraft, a rocket, in which he intends (intended) to launch himself out of the athmosphere (provided the chances of survival is estimated above 30%)

Apparently Ms Wall has been beheaded!

This statement is from Swedish medical examiner Brita Zilg
"The first method to identify a body is by teeth records because it's quick and cheap. But that's not possible in this case, then you use DNA."

This is just awful. A young adventurous lady whose life was cut short.

Just how did she die? Was this a burial at sea or illegal disposal of a body?

Seeing as the torso was not only beheaded but arms and legs removed as well, at least according to the article I read, I'm gonna go with illegal disposal. Also guessing that is the lesser of the charges that will be forthcoming.

I would agree. And it seems not real likely that an accident would do what happened to that young lady.

Murder. Gross abuse of a corpse. Plus the whole lying to authorities thing. I don't think he can walk free even if it was in international waters (which I don't know...) And if the torso washed up on shore in a week, it's pretty clear it international waters weren't in play.

Even if it were in International waters, he would be subject to laws of at least one country. More if she is a different nationality than he, or if the boat is registered elsewhere.

The torso was weighted down but apparently not enough.
The whole incident took place in Danish waters close to Copenhagen.

Prosecutors in Denmark say they will bring murder charges against the inventor suspected of killing a Swedish journalist on board his submarine.
They are expected to ask for the new charges when Mr Madsen appears in court in early September.
