    Default Desparate. Your advice needed.

The good wife has decided that "we" need to paint our 16'x20' bonus room upstairs. Just having finished building my fantail launch, she noticed that I now have time on my hands. Being a good Protestant, she doesn't want my idle hands becoming the devil's playground. Reminding her that there's plenty of fishing, rowing, paddling and sailing to be done, she is undeterred.
I've tried everything including telling her that latex paint dries best in the low humidity and coolness of winter. The heat and humidity of the summer is very bad for fresh paint, I say. I even tried convincing her that the moon is in the wrong phase for painting. She's not buying it.
The sting of the lash hangs over my head if I don't get this project going soon.
Bilge legend has it that Paul Pless has successfully put off finishing his infamous bathroom project for years. How does he do it?
Are they other masters of procrastination out there with any advice?

I'm not much of a support. Why not simply paint the room and be done with it instead of spending more effort on avoiding the job than actually doing it? If you insist on selecting the colour (since you are doing the painting) you might also reduce the enthusiasm for future jobs of the same kind.

The weather is a good one. Keeps changing.

In summer: messes up the paint.

In winter: can't open the windows, the fumes will give us brain damage.

    Simple.

For one plane ticket and one fantail launch, I'll hie up there and have it painted in a long morning.

Then we can go fish on my new boat!

If you do a terrible job, will it be credible? That is, can you point to minor but (to her) awful "mistakes" on the launch? Does she know it was supposed to be a fantail, for eg?

Resistance is futile. Just suck it up and paint the room; easier than figuring out how to avoid it.

Heavens, no. I've got fourteen rooms in my house. She'd have me start at one end and paint to the other. By then, it would be time to start over again.
On the other hand, if I just paint the room and do her other projects, she might be more open to me building another boat in the future...

That ship has already sailed. For years, my customers have been telling her what nice work I do. If I do lousy work around our house, she'll smell a rat...
Plus, she's very accepting of little faults in the workmanship.

    Sorry man, you're hooped.

On the upside, the house will look nice.

So far, my solution is tidiest.

Professional paint job, time for leisure, and room for a new boat.

Sounds like a win, win, win, to me.

What good is another boat in the future if you can't use the one you have??????

I don't know how old you wife is, but mine in years past did a very good job of indoor painting, even while raising kids, and was proud of it.

    Try this as a suggestion.

One of my wife's friends painted her kitchen herself and did a fine job of it so my wife decided to paint ONE wall of our laundry room. Half way through I heard, "This is a real pain." Any time she mentions painting, I ask if she'd like to help.

I've found that women are indeed very fine painters. My dear wife probably could do it but she knows I'm better at it, so leaves it to me.

Oh, man, you've got it easy. When my wife wants the room painted I have to tear down the horsehair plaster and the wooden lath, and the ceiling, door, baseboard and window moldings, rip out the Knob And Tube wiring, re-wire, insulate, install drywall then tape, prime and paint the drywall, reinstall the ceiling, door, baseboard and window moldings, prep and paint the moldings, then sand and refinish the hardwood floors. Good thing is I've almost finished the entire house.

Sheesh... I've already got seven boats stacked up around here and I only am really using two right now. However, that won't stop me from building more!
She has suggested that I can paint in the evenings and goof off with boats during the day.

My experience is that the preparation get's them anxious, "you're making a mess", "there's dust all over", but once the paint goes on their happy, it's about patience.

That's my wife's course of action when she wants to change the curtains on a bathroom window. Step 1: Dynamite the room. Step 2: Rebuild. Step 3: Hang new curtains.

    Alas... all is now lost.
The good wife just got home. Seems that she walked into the local Sherwin-Williams paint store, mentioned that our son is a sales representative for the company and instantly got a 40% discount. She was able to buy primer, ceiling paint and topcoat wall paint for all under $80.... I'm doomed.
Gawd... at those prices, she'll be bringing home paint in 55 gallon drums.
My fate is now sealed. Tomorrow, I'll start the spackle repairs and start prepping the room for paint.
The upside is that the boating weather for the next two days is crappy...

The eclipse, Rich, the eclipse! Can't paint in a month with an eclipse: the paint won't mix right; the solids will fall out of solution. And the bristles ability to hold paint will be diminished.

I am just now sitting and relaxing before cleaning up and starting dinner, while she is in the other room, her room, painting the crown moulding, door trim and baseboards that I just installed over the last day and a half.

It's her house. She likes to paint. No, wait, she likes to remodel and will paint if she has to. No, wait, she like to buy decorator crap and will remodel if she has to. In fifteen years in this house with her, we have repainted, just the living room, at least eight times. Just trying to get just the right color. Then she wants to change the carpets around again, this one in that room and that one in here. It the Rosanne Rosanna Danna mode of decorating: if it's not one thing, then it's another, until...

    ...death us do get relieved.
