Strange, I had no trouble viewing it. A very impressive boat but the cost must have been through the roof.

    It played here. Magnificent.

Humphrey Bogart once remarked,"The only reason to have money is to tell any SOB to go to h***."

Svea just reminded me of another! She looks tippy top in both design and execution. Maybe in my next life?

I found it. Very impressive. I worked in a shop that built an aluminum 12-meter boat (Canada I) and it wasn't anything like that...

Forgive me, but I have to poke pins at a few balloons...

How come we here are all a-twitter and gushing over this boat that costs a bazillion dollars, is ginormous, metal, and is the vanity play-toy of the uber-rich, yet when the same superlatives match a three-deck superyacht from Benetti or Azimut there are howls of protest from this forum about 'elites' and 'penis boats'? Do I detect a bit of a double-standard? If we hold up a mirror and look at ourselves, do we like what we see?

OK, OK, finger-wagging and scolding is over, I got that bit out of my system for now.
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

Yes a one percenter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Siebel one wonders if he'd have better spent the money on 1500 Caledonia Yawls.

This is the brand new Anker boat, yes? I think she sailed in the classics thing just completed in the Baltics but I didn't see her scores. The photos I have seen don't look as if she is set up to race.

No Mickey, she's a Tore Holm. I think he may have designed her for wood.

Problem with the J boats is that they are too tall to fit under the Mackinac bridge. Unless you heel over pretty far.

    I had no trouble.

I wondered about all the crew. I had an afternoon sail on Shamrock V around Newport, RI. Just to sail around she has a crew of seven, but for racing I think she needed about forty. The spinnaker pole looked dangerous.

Well, thankfully I think she's TOO pointy, but only just. Still. I could never own a boat that was too pointy, so I'm not at all tempted to try and acquire her.

Now, who has the number of the guy selling 1500 yawls?

That is amazing! I have to wonder how much effect all that rail meat has on the speed of the boat? The boat is so narrow and the rig is so large.

The rail meat exerts a righting moment of around 50,000 lbs, if that helps float yer boat...

Magnificent machines. If people are going to spend a lot of money building things, I would just as soon they build stuff like this.

Heck yes its a double standard. One can easily make the case boats like this should never be built. But it is magnificent and beautiful. But it did provide an average of 6 month wages for 200 people, that's just for the build.

Aquinas gave objective qualities of beauty:
    1) Complete - you can't have a beautiful home if it is missing a kitchen
    2) Clarity - It has to clearly represent what its ontological essence (a beautiful cat cannot look like a dog)
    3) Proportional - Everything must be in proportion, both in use and structure. The grand casinos in Vegas can never be considered beautiful, as their grandeur is out of proportion to their crass purpose.

    A good test case.

I'd love to be there , but KATE has been sold (possibly in San Francisco now) so I'd have to find another spectator boat to pop over on. After all St.Barths is only about 38 miles, albeit open Atlantic waters.

But, Peb, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

To some, Svea is too extreme in her overhangs, too deep to be practical, too much money to be tolerated, "not a proper sailboat", etc. etc.

Much the same noise as the complaints about this one, which is 1.) complete (even with kitchen), 2.) ontologically correct (it looks like a modern fast luxury yacht), and 3.) is proportionally correct (hydrodynamically efficient, aerodynamically slippery):

I am not saying that everyone should like the above yacht, but that they should be honest about why they dislike it. If it doesn't appeal to you aesthetically, fine; but if you like one $15m yacht but condemn another because it costs too much ($15m), you are being dishonest.

Would Endeavour be guilty of that as wells Svea?

I'd guess a mistype (D is right next to R: Dummy vs. Rummy) - or else AutoCorrect. Gareth is not the type to post something like that purposely. ETA: Gareth has already corrected it.

@ the OP: She's gorgeous & her beauty fits right in the eye of this beholder...

Yes, Rummy, Endeavour would fit into that statement. So would Shamrock V and Velsheda and Ranger and Hanuman and, and ...

Do not get the impression that I dislike these yachts; nothing is farther from the truth. But, there are some folks out there who don't like 'em (for many reasons) , same as there are some folks who don't like modern large motor yachts (for many reasons). I am just pointing out the intellectual dishonesty of saying one super-expensive yacht is beautiful and damn the cost, while in the next sentence saying that another super-expensive yacht is an abomination because it costs too much. Consistency, sir; consistency...

Umm. I like them to look at. I absolutely don't want one.

I once spent a week aboard a big Alden schooner (smaller than a J, though) in the Med and she absolutely "didn't speak to me". I could not imagine myself having anything to do with her. But she did look gorgeous. On another occasion my sister and I moored her boat alongside the Big Class "Merrymaid" which had just been dug out of the mud at Tollesbury in Hebridge Basin (she has since been restored) and I could not imagine sailing anything that big.

So, for the big yachts, it's down to what they look like, and I like the look of the Js and the metre classes and the big Alden and Fife schooners.

I wish the America's Cup was still sailed for in the J class, not in those odd spidery ice yachts on skis.

In power boats, I think I like the slightly older designs better. I like ones that have a proper funnel.

But I'm only interested in looking at them from afar and I'm just as happy to look at something else.

For me, it's the beauty and grace of a fine sailing vessel. They are designed primarily (by necessity) to work with the wind and waves. Mega motor yachts are designed primarily to please the owner, not the elements. They fight the wind and waves instead of working with them.
Should either be built when millions are starving around the world? Perhaps not. But, I'd rather the sailing vessel be built over the power vessel.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.
