    Default A-10's future?

I have some thoughts on this but must zip out the door now. I'll be back after a while

it's one of the things that raises flags about the MIC for me. it works just fine and the military wants to spend more money to replace it with something more high tech

But, Trump wants to dump more money into the military, why are you complaining about that?

I think attack helicopters is the planned replacement no runway needed, not sure about the cost capability ratio.

We used to dogfight them during desert exercises. Even without air to air missiles we'd win 50% of the time. Apaches would have a turkey shoot.

Except superior firepower doesn't compensate for a flawed strategy.

Supposedly the A-10 is being replaced by a "system" for close air support. It's not a specific aircraft anymore.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_air_support

The use of information technology to direct and coordinate precision air support has increased the importance of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance in utilizing CAS. Laser, GPS, and battlefield data transfer are routinely used to coordinate with a wide variety of air platforms able to provide CAS. Recent doctrine[24] reflects the increased use of electronic and optical technology to direct targeted fires for CAS. Air platforms communicating with ground forces can also provide additional aerial-to-ground visual search, ground-convoy escort, and enhancement of command and control (C2), assets which can be particularly important for low intensity conflict.[25]

The A-10 always seemed to me a splendidly able aircraft designed by a group who knew what the hell they were doing. The new replacement "system" sounds like the work of idiots with degrees.

There's also an A-10 that runs from London Bridge to King's Lynn where you can pick out a free boat.

Can't think of anyone, except Lockheed-Martin and some people in the Air Force procurement office, that want to replace the A-10 Warthog.

The Air Force is run by pilots, and they are by nature creatures attracted to new technology, so that explains that.

Attack helicopters are great at the role, but limited by speed and loiter time.

This was discussed yesterday. Kawasaki acquired a licence to build the A7, and subsequently developed a 624cc version. Closer to an A65 than an A10 but short stroked...

I'm not sure that is technically correct.
