Default WBF Product Help. I Need A Specific cabinet

We have a very narrow section between the driver cab bulkhead wall and the end of the grooming table. 12" to be exact ( actually to be even more exact 11.75" )

We have found an Ikea product that we have used but it is so flimsy it last about 6 months and then has to be replaced.

The Helmer is 11" wide 6 drawer metal cabinet. It fits the space perfect. They are folded and tabbed together like flimsy origami the draws don't lock so you have to put a metal rod between them and they still slide out occasionally causing a huge mess.

What I really want is something like this:

But I can't seem to find any in the narrow with we require.

    Any suggestions ?

If all else fails, a metal fab shop, or a cabinet shop...

Probably gonna be a custom job. Can the IKEA one be beefed up to work?

There are a lot of "in the cab style boxes" out there. We have a half dozen crew trucks and have fitted them with stuff from this outfit. The 11-3/4" requirement is tough. there are a number of options at 12" this one is narrow at 6"

They are out there I think you can find something.

You could drill holes and use file cabinet locks on that red cabinet.

There are a large number of external locks available https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1vpq8M...b-Drawer-b.jpg

Since Joe has me on ignore, someone may have to quote this so he can read it......

It's a side box for a mechanics tool box. A quality one can be had from Snap-On....
A cheapee from Sears...... Cheaper still Harbor Freight.

Finding one 11 3/4" wide or less is gonna be an issue.

No it is ridiculous they have no viable solution. It came with the most USELESS built in cabinet we had to rip it out, and YES the 11 3/4 is the WHOLE PROBLEM.

I wonder if the problem is a metric measurement. I'll bet it is 300mm!
We should look and see if there is a European or Au. product made for caravans.

If the ikea cabinet is what you need I'd see about beefing it up and adding a decent lock. A piano hinge would work well as a locking device. Can the drawers be strengthened with rivets?

Yeah, but it might be tough to pull off, if all ya got for tools is a clipper and a hose wand!

Joe, if you're still stuck, you might look up a cabinet shop supplier/commercial hardwood lumberyard.

Look for the guys who stock the full line of Blum hardware.

Blum makes a modular, steel drawer system.

Ask the counterman who is buying that stuff regularly, then give that individual a call.

You might be pleasantly surprised on the price vs the metal cabinets made for vans, etc.

    Hanging Locker.

So perhaps a gym or school locker organizer might be a good and ready solution.

Those metal draws look to be the same flimsy folded origami metal that the Ikea ones are made of. Also no locking system will give the same all over the floor on a quick right turn.

Turn latches or a hinged bar lock would solve the locking. No idea as to how sturdy the drawers are. Finding a quality drawer in the size you need will be tough.

Some door skin plywood and epoxy and the thing is indestructible.

Try drawer catch magnets on your current IKEA cabinet. These magnets are pretty effective. I use them on access panels.

Joe, just a thought - is there a place nearby where they resell hospital / doctor office furnishings - I have purchased file
cabinets in such a place, and possibly a meds cart or flat file cabinet may suit your needs

Or, Joe, check with office salvage places for an old keypunch card file cabinet - those may be more the size you are seeking -

Just so. The Blum prefab metal drawer boxes are NOT cheesy. They might not, however, be the best solution when you're trying to squeeze every millemeter of space out of an opening. Seriously... a professional cabinetmaker can advise you and fabricate something to precisely fit your space constraints and storage needs.

Even a metal cabinet has to have rolled/formed edges to provide thickness/resistance to distortion.

Going to metal drawer sides saves additional space.

In a 'traditional' frameless cabinet, one would lose 3 1/2" of width to the necessary sides/slides/drawer slides. Take that from 11 3/4" and you have about 8 1/4" of usable storage left.

A cabinet with 1/2" Baltic Birch sides, and Metabox/Legrabox drawers should give you about 1 1/2" back (Though I do not have the specs in front of me).

It should be cost effective compared with hunting down a stock cabinet that will work, and is rated at 100 pounds per drawer with full extension slides.

At roughly 25 a set for full extension metabox slides for just the hardware cost effective is pretty subjective. That's over 150 for just hardware, no labor, no drawer bottoms fronts or backs nor a cabinet to mount them to. Add in some labor and it's getting pricey, but that's what quality costs.

    What's you budget Joe?

This one fits the width requirement. Maybe it's sturdier than the ikea.

Cheapest solution is a file cabinet security lock for that red cabinet, looks like a piano hinge, it attaches to the front corner of the cabinet and the other part of the hinge swings in front of the drawers and locks in place.

Regarding IBM card cabinets: I have several, but all are two-card-drawers wide, so too wide. I love'em because the drawers are on a carriage and come out individually by just lifting off.

I have in storage I think 20 empty metal cabinets that were used to store photo slides, they probably would fit, but each unit is 5 drawers high, they sit on each other with bumps and dimples in the tops and bottoms, you would need to bolt them together. Plus the slide partitions would probably get in your way. Ah, just checked, 15.5" wide, no good. And the drawers don't lock, same issue as the red cabinet.

You might find a single vertical unit used for library file cards, but it would also require locking drawers.

All of the above is industrial-modern trendy now and not cheap anywhere near the big prosperous cities.

Regarding the flimsiness, businesses everywhere the past ten years have been getting rid of vintage file cabinets as things get computerized. Those old ones are made in USA, heavy gauge steel, steel drawer slides with steel balls, 100% drawer extension, and the drawers lock. You can still buy them new, like $1000 each, at least when I looked years ago maybe not now. Used, they're like $25 down to as low as $5, usually mint condition. Standard or legal width. New Chinese-made ones at the office store don't hold a candle to them. I bought a bunch for tool drawers for a friend, each drawer can hold a full load of car or marine batteries. The wide legal size can hold 2 rectangular outboard tanks in each drawer, perfect size. I think the standard size is just a skosh too big for your application, I'm guessing about 13" wide, otherwise those would be perfect.
When you can take the pebble from my hand, it will be time for you to leave.

The Ikea is like $35 ( you kinda get a lot more than you pay for but not enough )- Ideally I would like to keep it at the $200 range if possible. I cant justify $1,000 for a single 11" 6 drawer cabinet. I looked at the Bisley 6 draw it's marginally more robust than the Ikea. Also it doesn't have any locking mechanism and the draws just slide out.
