Default Polaris on the hard in PT

My friend Jack reports that the former USGS reserarch vessel/former yacht "Polaris" is on the hard in Port Townsend, awaiting some repairs.

I got to know the Polaris when she served as the "in-the'Bay" research ship for the US Geological Survey, based at the Port of Redwood City.

Anybody got the skinny on what's going on with her?

Nail sick. Probably needs a total refasten at least
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

I've seen those terms before. "nail sick" or "iron sick" but I don't really know what they mean. I assume that you're saying that the boat was bonded with steel or iron fittings in the hull..nails or screws... and they're rusting out.

Just so. And unless it is pure wrought iron the corrosion products will be eating into the wood, making it sick as well.
