Default NZ yacht lost off Fiji

A 61' New Zealand yacht has apparently hit a reef and gone down off Fiji.

There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

The crew has been located and a vessel is on its way to pick them up.

    Good news!

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

From broken back stay to wrecked on a reef. That's a pretty bad day. I notice JB uses satellite images to help with his navigation, because as mentioned in the linked article, charts around there are not that great. Good to hear all are well.

What a load of crap in that article. They hit an island.Oyster hits oysters. The charts are out metres not miles. Two of the boats we met at Fulanga were on standby to help rescue them.

Plenty of GPS silliness to go around. http://wavetrain.net/techniques-a-ta...ench-polynesia

T bone an island? Navionics doesn't seem too far out to me. I always check it with a backup program when we come into a new area. Or fire up the radar to see if the island is where it should be. Generally it's close enough for macro navigation. Micro is all sight around this area anyway, unless you've been there before and have tracks or waypoints etc.
The boat we're cruising with has the latest cmap and it appears to be bang on.
It'd be interesting to se the position report on Jungle relative to what I can get on my 1970 black and white Admiralty chart. From British government surveys 1854 to 1962.
I daresay Ono I lau is still filling a bunch of water between 20 35 00S and 21 05 00 or so latitude. There's a gap of 40 miles between it and the next most northern island of Vatoa and another 40 up to Fulanga where we spent a few weeks. I might be happy with 20 miles either side as a landfall avoidance in the middle of the night in their situation.
