    I see them grinding away. Narrator says the grinders are pumping hydraulic fluid into an accumulator that powers various motors and trim tabs to control surfaces.
    Why hand grinders and not all cycle setups? Legs are stronger than arms.

    Ooops. Now I see that the Kiwis are all bikes.

    A member of the Oracle crew was discussing the relative merits of each system on TV the other night.
    Evidently windage is an enormous consideration, and grinders kneeling low in the hull present less windage than a cyclor. While acknowledging that a cyclor is capable of more power, he made a point that the work output of a seated cyclor is far less than when up-off-the-saddle (more windage), and that they had found that the output of the kneeling grinder to be about the same as the seated cyclor.

    His logic is sound, of course, but TNZ seems to be doing fine with their cyclors.

    It occurs to me that the athletes (grinder vs cyclor) are very different body types, and that the cyclor is likely to be 25lb lighter. When one thinks of the buckets of money thrown at these boats in the name of weight-reduction, carrying 100lb less crew seems like a no brainer.

    The commentators for Sunday's match said that the NZ boat was far more concerned about aerodynamics than the US boat - showing the cyclors down lower in the hull (& smooth backs sticking up as opposed to moving heads & shoulders sticking up) & the helmsman & tactician the same. The US boat had the helmsman & tactician hiked out like dinghy sailors.

    They also said that some of the cyclors were olympic cyclists.

    I had also heard another factor, a cyclor has hands free to work some controls of which there are MANY on these boats. Look at the number of buttons on the wheels in addition to the twist grip controls on the wheels.

    My inclination would be to have both. Cycle's on one side and grinders on the other. This way the legs and arms would get a break, which, I would think, would help towards the end of the race.
    May be some rough water ahead. We're getting new captain.

    Team NZ has in the past had Olympic rowers on the grinders, they're good at selecting specialist physical strengths for specific jobs on the boat.
