Jeronimo Yanez not guilty on all counts after shooting Philando Castille seven times during a 'routine traffic stop' as Philando was reaching for his wallet.

    I can't understand that.

Massachusetts just convicted a woman who's ex-boyfriend committed suicide when she egged him on. I mean, if telling him to go kill himself is a crime, then shooting an unarmed man 7 times must be as well (I would have thought).

Don't ask me to explain it. Not right.

(Just to be strictly accurate, he did have a gun, told Yanez about it, never pulled it out.)

Driving while black. Castille had been pulled over by police 49 times in the last 13 years; all minor infractions, such as license plate lamp burned out, failure to signal in a parking lot, etc. WTF Minnesota?

I remember when Captain Blight proudly proclaimed he had moved from the south to Minneapolis to get away from racism.

Hard to second guess a jury without seeing all the evidence, but the evidence for this case was thoroughly described by the press.

    This is an unjust verdict.

Sorry, you don't tell a cop you have a gun, then reach behind your back....

Excuses excuses Jack. If you were going for your gun the last thing you'd do is tell the cop first.

    It's plain murder Jack.

But in the historic line of such matters in the US since before the civil war.

No. A judge cannot convict a defendant after a jury acquits that defendant

In many places it is required to tell a police officer that you have a (legal) concealed weapon. Even where not required, it is good practice. Unless you are black.

No, but they have the right to consider circumstances in sentencing. Many years ago I was on a jury in a negligent homicide case. The evidence presented left us no alternative but to find her guilty. But it was a very tough call in circumstances that could easily happen to any of us. After the verdict, we the jury felt we had made a terrible mistake and I was elected to go talk to the judge. He welcomed me into his chambers and heard my concern and said he agreed and would take it into account in sentencing. Because of that, she was sentenced to community service rather than jail time.

Goes back to Rodney King. Jury did not convict those cops. NYC cops emptied their guns into a young black man on his porch holding his cell phone. They were acquitted. The beat goes on.

    Brandon Stanley,

    Daniel Shaver

    James Scott

    Andrew Thomas

    Dylan Noble

Also, here's a study that shows that more whites are shot by cops than blacks per year( 179 vs 102 in 2016; 449 total killed by police)

Which comes out to about 35 million people based on a US total population of 320 million. If the cops were out to get blacks, they surely could have killed more than 102 out of 35 million.

That 5X is a meaningless comparison, the numbers are so small, your likelihood of being killed by a cop is infinitesimal to begin with.

It's not meaningless when it colors every interaction that a black man might have with police throughout his entire life. It's not meaningless when it's on top of other institutional racism by the police. It's not meaningless when there is a statistically significant difference between getting shot by the police depending upon your race.
