Default YES! Just got a phone call

My wall tent is ready! I'm out of here early tomorrow morning, going camping, rowing, fishing, wolf, black bear, sea lion, whale and other wildlife photographing, hiking, shaping a set of 9' oars and reading mysteries for the entire summer, expecting to return around 1 Sept.

    Can you tell I'm excited?

See youse boogers then, and I hope all goes well for all of you in the meantime. Be nice to each other!

There's a subculture interested in wall tents, mostly for winter camping with woodstoves inside. A few makers now filling that niche.

That's what my vacation home is at my daughters. 12'x20' wall tent w stove on a platform. It's tucked away behind a tool shed w a view of the garden. Hot summer nights can be a bother but fall to spring is fantastic. Big down cover on queen sized futon bed. High back wicker chair. Bright city lights 30miles away. Coyotes are creepy howlers.

This has been my limited experience - winter camping. However, if you are traveling on horseback or 4-wheeler and plan to make camp and stay a week, a wall tent seems like a real treat.

    Bon Voyage, Gib.
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

Gawd dang it; you can't post such a envy inducing thread and run offt for three months, it just not how it's done. well, I hope you have some good stories when you get back . . . now that I'm going to look up walled tents and all of the accoutrements for an adventure for the next week. . . and dream.

I hope you have a great trip.

It's the secret of happiness in the winter bush, and it's home-made. You can't buy one like it, although there are some similar.

The dimensions are 9" x 9" x 22", and that firebox is sized to be serviced with 3" stovepipe. Draws fine.

I forget the gauge, but I think it's 26. The weight is 11 lbs with the pipe -- which all stows inside.

It's made of pop-rivets; steel of course. Bent around a temporary bending-brake rigged on the workbench with a couple of door hinges.

It's wonderful in a wall tent, or small cabin. You can get the side red-hot if the firewood is good. You sit beside the stove, accept a mug of rum from your trip-partner, bask in the heat, and say, "Ahhhhh......" and totally relax.

The hole is sized for my middle pot. That one goes right inside up to the bail handle, right into the flames. And thus it'll boil a liter of water as quick as at home -- or quicker than electric. And in the meantime it's drying your clothes and sleeping bags.

I set one up in Drake as well in the fall -- wonderful on a chilly night in a wilderness anchorage.

Making a woodstove is NOT complicated. It's just a metal box. No calculations are required. And it doesn't have to be airtight or burn all night. In a cold or wet environment, ANY source of dry heat is good. However, having said that, if you mess with these dimensions you will then need 4" pipe, not 3", and then 5 sections will not fit in the stove for travel. And thus the package will weigh more.

    My pleasure, Tom.

Winter trips into a wilderness are good for the soul.

It's best of course to go with someone who has gained the skills, but after that, once the train drops you off, no bugs, no bears, and no people.

On this last trip, 9 days, we saw no one at all, nor any tracks of people or machines.
