Crazy. Really stupid. Basic rule - wear a PFD.
A society predicated on the assumption that everyone in it should want to get rich is not well situated to become either ethical or imaginative.

I'm not anti-PFD, but really how would a PFD be an advantage in this situation?

there are now 3 big fouls on that boat. No PDFs, picking someone out of water under way and without proper leverage, moreover done what looks like middle age dudes who have never done a practice man overboard drill. Sheesh!

    O, that advantage.
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

Whiskers isn't wearing a PFD either, so if he falls in while trying to rescue Baldy then they could both drown.

I don't see what you guys are seeing.

Rotator cuff injuries? Baldy is clearly no couch-potato, he can do a few pull-ups. Whiskers is basically starting a hefty lawnmower. I don't see any undue loads or extreme range of motion being imparted on those shoulders.

Why are we equating falling overboard with drowning? It's a fair-weather boat race, they'd be in the water for 5-10 minutes at the absolute most.
Is it too much to assume that anyone working the foredeck of a racing boat (without a PFD) has some basic swimming ability?

They're struggling so mightily to get baldy back on board because if they don't their race is over (they need to turn around and collect him and then finish dead-last), not because anyone's life is in peril.
