Default What are you watching? (Movies, TV, YouTube, etc.)

I was enjoying our neighbor thread "What are you reading?" and found myself wondering what y'all are watching.
A quick search didn't turn up anything recent, and a trial shot in that thread was not welcomed by the OP, so here you go!

Wife and I caught this, last night, on Netflix. I give it four stars. Two thumbs up. YMMV.

It's based on three different factual storylines from the '08 real estate crash. Clever, funny, heartbreaking. Well done.
    Highly recommended.

Not much. But we did recently upgrade to fiber optic internet service, and some sort of basic cable package came with it. So I've watched some MASH reruns, which is fun. And I've watched a few episodes of such 'copshop' staples as Law & Order; Criminal Minds; and NCIS. The kids have Netflix - and for the right series, I might watch with them.

Documentaries mostly and comedy quiz shows: QI, Have I got News for You, and Mock the Week, Jools Holland for music.
Her indoors also enjoys some quiz shows and some drama series.

'Her indoors' watches a great deal more than me, and neither of us are indoors much unless it's dark or torrential rain.
In summer we often don't eat till 10 rather than be inside in daylight.

You would be well screwed up if you lived in northern Scandinavia or Finland, still light at midnight in summer.

Am furious about "Homefires". The last episode ended with a woman giving birth, the town doctor and his wife attending, the father pacing the floor, and a downed Spitfire just crashed into the building.

Holy cow. That sounds like a total disconnect between the show runners and the bean counters, doesn't it? Completely frustrating for those of us on this end.

I almost never watch TV, but I watched My Neighbor Totoro with Zoe the Wonder Girl last night. Miyazaki's a god.

    RE: cop shops

The best police show, vs. detective stuff, that I've seen recently, was a British Netflix production, "Happy Valley".
    Gritty. 100 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Oh, man, I missed it! Was it broadcast or a cable channel? Now I'm going to have to start searching.
Just that screen you posted is blowing my mind. I could do a Miyazaki film festival any old time!

I take that back. Did the search. Here it is, on Netflix DVD. Sweet.

I think you can get all of Miyazaki's films on DVD now. When I first discovered him, you could only get a couple of them in the US, and I got the rest on VHS fansub tapes (remember those?)

Have you ever seen his music video for On Your Mark by Chage and Aska? It's my favorite Miyazaki thing, maybe my favorite film of all time, all six minutes of it. Ignore the subtitles, they're dumb. The two policemen look a lot like the musicians. Here you go:

But, Mike... Unless you're typing forum entries on a computer from the same era, you have access to an amazing world of streaming media. Film, video, music, and an amazing array of podcasts, many of which are also broadcast on "Old Fashioned Radio."

I've just binged on Line of Duty. A good Brit police series.

Nothing much, but listening a lot. Opera and serious music (classical if you like) both ancient and modern mostly. Some jazz, some old timey country and bluegrass.
You can listen and do something else as well.

Right there with you. I don't do video unless I am forced to go on YouTube (bletch) to find a piece of music.

I don't watch TV, and not many movies. I got an extension cable so I can hook my headphones to the computer at work, so I've been listening to interesting music on YouTube. There's a lot out there I didn't know about, and it's easy to stumble across more. Lately the Watersons from the '60s, and an obscure British folk group called Blue Murder.

    I'm re-watching this series:

An outstanding series... 100% filmed in hand-held 16mm, giving it a gritty, realistic 'look'. Absolutely superb acting, especially Andre Braugher, Clark Johnson, Yaphet Kotto. It's from the 90's, and might be hard to find... I have the complete DVD set.

For Baltimoreans, the series was filmed there... lots of local color and culture.

Both outstanding. Have you discovered Jon Boden yet? Oystagirl considers his album Songs from the Floodplain the best of the millennium, at least to date, and he's releasing a sequel later this year. He's the genius behind Bellowhead, used to play in Eliza Carthy's band the Ratcatchers, and plays or sings every note of Floodplain himself. Oystagirl calls it a graphic novel for the blind, and I know what she means; it's a post-apocalyptic vision of England that rings achingly true.

I can't recommend it highly enough, if you're into That Sort Of Thing.

What are you doing about it?

Hey, if you ever decide to come down to the Twin Cities, be sure do it on the second or fourth Monday of the month, and you can contribute something really good to the pub singing (examples here).
