Default Can Broken Anti-Ventilation Plate be Repaired?

So, I screwed up (don't ask how ) and broke one side of the anti-ventilation plate on my 40 hp Honda. I still have the piece that's missing in the photos. Can this be fixed, or am I looking at having to replace the whole lower unit housing?

That's a common-type repair for around here. You just need a welder who knows what's what with aluminum.

Yes, it can. Take it to someone who fabricates aluminium for advise on the best approach. My guess: weld, grind, re-paint.

For now, I managed to cut a piece of fiberglass laminate to the shape of the anti-vent plate and fit it underneath the plate and then bolted on the fin again over my 'patch'. Ran it WOT yesterday and so far, so good. A little ugly, but it'll work for now.

If I make it through this season, I'll seek out a good welder over the winter.

    Thanks!

I haven't used them, but have heard good recommendations.

Honda refers to this as the "Anti-Ventilation" plate.

Okay, good. I'll hang on to this and pay them a visit at the end of the season, provided my 'fix' hold 'till then. Thanks!

Ventilation is when a prop pulls air --or exhaust gas--down from the surface of the water. That's what the plate shown prevents and why it is called an anti-ventilation plate.

Cavitation is when bubbles form on the low pressure side (back side) of the prop; literally, the water boils because the pressure drops too much. When these boil-bubbles burst, they can damage your prop, usually evidenced by deep pitting of the metal. This is termed, "cavitation burn." They are might little explosions occurring at 1000's of times per minute. A damaged prop, particularly one with too blunt or too sharp blade edge, can cause cavitation.

The anti-ventilation plate is often called the, " anti-cavitation plate, " colloquially, but that is a misnomer.

    Thanks Kevin, I stand corrected.
