I can't date it, it appears in quite few different stories, kind of a generic "the front fell off photo".

It is from 2013 and it sank. See http://gcaptain.com/mol-box-ship-suf...inks-off-yeme/ and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOL_Comfort for more details.

I think that there might have been a thread, with contributions from ACB.

The Wiki article says it was fairly new and they don't know the cause. That is disturbing.

Container ships are a challenge to design structurally, they basically have no deck, so where most ships, especially tankes and bulkers are like a box girder, they are liks a channel section used on its side.
You can see here where they have worked in thick plate in the hatch coaming and what is left of the deck

If I read the plan correctly it is about 3 inches thick, compared with one inch elsewhere.

This is what the structure has to survive. Fatigue cracking anyone?

With the cargo reliably all standardized TEUs, with known widths, would a couple longitudinal bulkheads, fitted in between the container stacks, help remedy the weakness? There are probably difficulties/inadequacies to that idea (plainly, since it isn't already done), but just from a theoretical standpoint, is it an idea with merit?

Some designs have a longitudinal centre line bulkhead, but to reuse my analogy, that is just making two side by side "C" girders the wrong way up.

That will help hogging or sagging loads, but you need a deck to resist torsion loads, hence the heavy torsion boxes at the sheer.

This is the biggest problem with international container shipping.....what to do when one or many containers fall from a ship.

When they fall off a rail car we just lift them back up and on, or from a truck the same thing. But from the ocean ?????????????

I've been reading, probably hundreds, of posts about bumping into these things in the middle of the ocean during a day time passage or more horrifying in the dead of night when you have no chance of seeing the container floating about 6" under the surface.

These things are so big and heavy there is very little chance that your boat is going to come out of the meeting unscathed or in far too many instances still able to float.

So you jump immediately into "save our soul" mode.

My feelings are that very little can be done to ensure the boat doesn't lose it's load, but that something can be done to assist the sailor from blindly & silently attacked by a steel enemy floating just under the water surface waiting patiently to pounce on you just as you come by and end your peaceful day.

I boat on inland waterways so the issue of this or something similar is next to impossible to happen, but I do read about it and keep my mind open to a fix for this problem of which I think I have discovered a possible answer to this problem.

Whether this is feasible or not I will leave up to the experts, but here is my thought.

Attach to each container a signalling device that will keep sending out both an audio & visual signal as well as a radio warning the moment the container hits water.

As for how long it would be able to continue sending out a signal of course would be dependent on the battery strength at the time of dumping into water.

Remember the signal is not intended for recovery, just to advise that here is this big thing that when hit might sink your boat.

I'd really appreciate reading others thoughts on this subject.

An extension of the AIS system could work but every container would need a transmitter and that would cost a lot. Industry would scream!

Better would be to mandate some sort of water soluble plugs. When the container gets soaked, the plug melts/dissolves/opens water enters the container and it sinks. Of course this wouldn't work on a container filled with foam insulation or other such floatable cargo. The biggest obstacle to any sort of safety system is that the larges shipper is China. I kind of doubt that they could give a whack about small craft safety.

Problem with soluble plugs is that without hatch covers all containers get wet with rain, spray, and the occasional dollop of green water. That is a lot of water damaged cargo every voyage.
