Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.
Instant tourist attraction, just add ice.

I saw that on the news last night and thought, It must be really impressive in person.
My B-I-L in St. John's has been telling me that this year is a bumper year for sea ice and icebergs on the east and north coasts of Newfoundland. Good for sealing, bad for fishing...
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
WOW.

Next election, vote against EVERY Republican, for EVERY office, at EVERY level. Be patriotic, save the country.
I loved the smell of Hubbard Glacier. Do icebergs have that smell?
No adversary is worse than bad advice.
Going there tomorrow if the weather cooperates. If we don't go it won't be a major loss. Looks like we will have lots at home this spring.

Got my edjukation in that town. Spent a few years there. It really sucks for the harbour when that big guy's siblings park themselves right in the middle of the narrows blocking all traffic in and out.
If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.

There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.
We managed to get down to Ferryland Friday afternoon. The berg had moved a fair bit away by then and had changed shape a bit. It was still very impressive. It was a mauzy day, but I was able to take a few shots between squalls without getting too soaked.

tell us about the boats
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.
Them's fishin boats Paul.
We'd need mmd's knowledge as to the history and proper name. It's a common design I've seen along the Southern Shore. F'glass over wood. Nice hull form, but ugly cabins.
Some info here maybe? I've not yet had the chance to look.

Well Mr Pless, I asked around, and the most consistent answer I could get was these boats were simply called "motor boats". Unfortunately they are disappearing.
Styles vary considerably by region and builder.

Dem be trap skiff, b'ys.
Here's a lovely video (CBC program "Land and Sea", 1981):
Here's a photo of one "loaded to the gunn'ls" back in the days when one could catch a boatload of cod:
And a link to a website with lots of photos of Newfoundland inshore craft, with many trap skiffs illustrated:

Edit to add:
In response to Steve's comment "Styles vary considerably by region and builder", up to the advent of molded fiberglass trap skiffs in the '70s, knowledgeable folks could tell which community a trap skiff came from, as each community developed its own unique style of trap skiff. This was common among fishing communities throught the region, and was reflected in many types of boats, too, such as Cape Islanders, rodneys, skiffs, etc.

Always wondered what the shape is like underwater.
Thanks Michael.
Trap Skiff works for me. Unfortunately the local vernacular tends to be rather general with regards to boat styles and whales.
