Default U.S drops 21,000 lb. bomb in Afganistan

Just saw this on the news. Going after ISIS fighters burrowed in tunnels/caves. Anyone heard of such a bomb before? It's the first time used in combat.
I remember a 11,000 lb. "bunker buster" bomb being used in the past, but nothing this big.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

"People are thinking like I don't have a plan, I hate doing it. So I was on one of the shows, and I said:

ISIS is making a tremendous amount of money because of the oil that they took away, they have some in Syria, they have some in Iraq, I would bomb the **** out of them.

I would just bomb those suckers, and that's right, I'd blow up the pipes, I'd blow up the refineries, I'd blow up ever single inch, there would be nothing left.

And you know what, you'll get Exxon to come in there, and in two months, you ever see these guys? How good they are, the great oil companies, they'll rebuild it brand new... And I'll take the oil"

Lancasters dropped 22,000 lb Grand Slam bombs in WW2.
One day the USAF will catch up!
Grand Slam could penetrate 20 ft. of concrete.

ETA: In fact, the US did develop their version, the TA14.

Developed for the Iraq war, but this is the first combat use. Must have been approaching it's "sell-by date".

Should we invest in the manufacturer or is it too late?

MOAB is an air blast bomb with no penetration capability.
Not much use against the intended caves and tunnels.
But it does make a nice big bang.

Not enough bang for the buck. That's one reason why we went so nuke in the 50s.

My understanding is that a thermobaric weapon is the instrument of choice against cave complexes.

Yeah, that was my understanding of MOAB too.

Well here is what the pentagon says about the effects:

The main attribute of the MOAB is that it causes overpressure," Dr. Adam Lowther, the director of the US Air Force's school of deterrence, told Business Insider on Thursday in a phone interview.

That overpressure, caused when the bomb detonates at a low altitude over its target, is designed to crush underground tunnels and bunkers like the ones often used by the Islamic State, the terorrist group also known as ISIS.
While the attack Thursday was the first of its kind, Lowther said the bomb was "not even close to being a nuclear weapon" and he would "not make the argument that it’s a symbol of escalation" in the conflict in Afghanistan.

I suppose it all depends on how deep the caves and tunnels are. I could see shallow bunkers being in trouble.

I feel the main reason for deployment is PR, rather than strategic.

Part of the theory with that bomb is that the air is sucked out of the tunnels to feed the firebomb when it explodes. There won't be much left of those bunkers now.

Still the same mentality of more bombs or bigger bombs will solve all problems......spreading democracy by bombing......a great example......you ever wonder where North Korea got its attitude?

Don't worry. Trump called Putin ahead of time to make sure there were no Russians in the tunnels.
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

Oh gawd, he found the bomb hoard, now we're in for it. If TRMP doesn't like it, he'll throw a bomb at it, his believers will be ecstatic!

Prolly working on the theory of the bigger the bomb, the higher his approval ratings and I suspect he really wanted to drop a nuke.

Scarborough revealed the story while he was interviewing former CIA Director Michael Hayden on "Morning Joe" about Trump's campaign.“Several months ago, a foreign policy expert went to advise Donald Trump,” Scarborough said. “And three times he asked about the use of nuclear weapons — three times he asked. At one point, ‘If we have them, why can’t we use them?’”
