Just want to say a belated thanks to WBF for solving photo posting problems. Easy task now.

But lately I've started to have a problem in watching videos posted on the Forum. When I get to a thread that has a video, this is what I see:

    BlankVideoonForum.jpg

I'm guessing that is my problem, not WBF because I haven't seen anyone else having these problems. If I go to Youtube I can watch those videos, just not the ones posted here.

    Any ideas out there?

    Thanks,

    Eric

No ideas, but another poster on my A Kurylko Alaska in Georgian Bay thread (post #57) said he wasn't able to view my videos, either--and he suspected it had something to do with his computer settings rather than the forum.

The person that posts the video on Youtube sets the parameters about how the video can be viewed.
There are choices like Hand held phones etc.,.

Also if your computer is not up to date on everything it can cause problems.
If just one JAVA file is missing it can put you out of business.

You know Donald, this sounds like a good idea, perhaps an update of the software that shows the video would be the right thing.

What software would that be? I am such a computer dolt.

    Thanks,

Just an update. The problem is not with my computer.

I logged on to the forum from a different computer today and had the same outcome.

    Black box on videos.

So it must be something associated with my username.

    HELP!

    Thanks,

    Eric,

I never got a message--did you send one? A quick thought--what browser are you using? From postings I've seen on the Forum, it seems like Chrome works for videos, but maybe Safari doesn't. So I'd try Chrome and hope the fix is that easy.

Sorry about that Tom, I sent a PM to the individual who was having problems seeing your videos. Asked him if he found a cure. He said that it magically healed itself.

I'll give it a shot! Thanks!

And Tom has the winning answer! Thanks Tom!

Video's don't work with WBF and Windows 7 and 10, but is working with Chrome.

Now I can get back to watching Leo and the Tally Ho!

    Muchas Gracias!

Why is the photo rotated? Should I anticipate that?

    Like so?

From the FAQ, under the Posting Pictures section:
...Note: if you have a "portrait" formatted image, the software will turn it sideways. So, you can either crop the image, or, put it on a "canvas" that will make it landscape orientation. (Horizontals work, verticals get turned horizontal.)

My problem seems related to Russ' except different:

    MerriePartner.jpg

I took the picture in landscape format. I'm looking up through the deck from below. On my computer it shows it to be oriented correctly. But here on the WBF it is turned 180. What am I doing wrong?

I downloaded, flipped it, and it seems to post fine.

So you edited the photo? Ah, yes, that would work. But why is it necessary? When the photo seems to be oriented properly on my computer before I upload, why does it flip when I post it? And how would I know whether it needed to be edited before I post it?

it was oriented landscape when I took it, and when I posted it. The flip was a 180 flip, not just 90.

It would be interesting if, with a different image, the process repeated itself. I've not seen this 180 rotation happen before.

In my thread titled "Catboat Project" the 180 rotation also happened in post #1.

I found that photos taken on my ipad appear upside down here. Even though they appear right way up elsewhere. If it turn the ipad over, all good.

Sometimes a picture posted from my iPhone or iPad will not be oriented the right way when posted, even though it is oriented correctly in my library. To correct this I rotate the photo in iPhoto save it then rotate it back to the correct orientation. Once I’ve done that the forum software will read and post it correctly.

What program did you use to rotate them? It seems to make a difference because the results seem random and I don't see a lot of detail as to which program was used to rotate and save. Could be I wasn't paying attention.
Just for grins, using Firefox (no idea if that matters) I saved these two images to the desktop, opened them with Windows Photo Viewer, rotated them until they were upright and closed the viewer. Photo Viewer automatically saves when you rotate a picture.

Yes, photo editing after the fact can solve the problem. But what creates the problem? And why is it a problem only sometimes?

I can turn the box on and off. I can not explain much of anything about what makes it work.

I think that 'smart' mobile devices have tilt meters that automatically rotate images without changing the files, so you can't tell what the default orientation is. In my limited experience, they usually rotate them in the most annoying way possible. 'Smart machines' can be frustratingly stupid. Dumb programs don't try to second guess your intent, they just do what you tell them to do. When you rotate an image in Photo viewer, in typical microsoft fashion, it writes a change to the file without asking. This is one of the few non-infuriating examples of an unbidden change.
Editing is easy enough. Post, look at the results and edit as needed.
