An airline supervisor walked onto the plane and brusquely announced: “We have United employees that need to fly to Louisville tonight. … This flight’s not leaving until four people get off.”

One guy was knocked unconscious and dragged off the plane then staggered back on and ultimately left on a stretcher.

why is it "four people"? Why is it not the four seats at the back of the bus who paid the cheapest fare?

and why were those four passengers permitted to board in the first place?

    Dear United Airlines,
What would have been less expensive, raising the ante by $200 a pop, or doing what you did. Also, isn't the role of police officer to enforce public law? Since when do police officers enforce corporate policy.

    From today's Lawvul Courier-Journal

"We apologize for the overbook situation. Further details on the removed customer should be directed to authorities."

(Watch the video here if it does not display on your device)
Bridges, a Louisville resident, gave her account of the flight Sunday night.
Passengers were told at the gate that the flight was overbooked and United, offering $400 and a hotel stay, was looking for one volunteer to take another flight to Louisville at 3 p.m. Monday. Passengers were allowed to board the flight, Bridges said, and once the flight was filled those on the plane were told that four people needed to give up their seats to stand-by United employees that needed to be in Louisville on Monday for a flight. Passengers were told that the flight would not take off until the United crew had seats, Bridges said, and the offer was increased to $800, but no one volunteered.
Then, she said, a manager came aboard the plane and said a computer would select four people to be taken off the flight. One couple was selected first and left the airplane, she said, before the man in the video was confronted

That should be an interesting lawsuit.

The United Manager and those responsible for letting those 'extra' passengers aboard need to be sacked or a serious kick up the rear.

Not the easiest retirement planning approach (no implied pre-meditation), but I suspect the impending court case / settlement is likely to make life more comfortable for the assaulted man in the future. I hope so.

If it were possible, that treatment almost seems worse than cabin crew on a normal Ryanair flight!

If they sell you a seat, allow you to board, then remove you from that seat, that's fraud.

No, I do NOT want their $800, or their cheesy hotel room. I want to go to my destination, which is why I bought the god&^^%$ ticket in the first place, under the assumption that they were actually going to take me there.

I don't think he has a leg to stand on with regards to suing United. Even on my very high frequent flyer mile standing with Delta, my ticketing agreements say that I fly at the whim of the Delta and they are free to change my itinerary at their whim. . .

I think your attitude leaves a lot to be desired. If I find myself in such a situation, I have options. I usually find one that does not make me too unhappy.

I can see United's problem in that without those employees deadheading to where they were needed, more passengers could be inconvenienced. And I'd not be surprised if the line did not know of the problem till after passenger boarding. Not excusing: just understanding.

Response to United Express Flight 3411
    April 10, 2017
“This is an upsetting event to all of us here at United. I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers. Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened. We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation.” – Oscar Munoz, CEO, United Airlines

I'm sure Reynard can chime in here, but several airline systems have been royally effed up over the last week. Their simply trying to recover. If those 3 crew didn't go, then 75 other passengers would have missed their flight.

Those bumped should have never been boarded.

Right, and that's a very real problem for United, but the way to solve the problem is to BRIBE people out of their seats. Start the bidding at $500 and go from there. I would think that those four seats would have cost a total of $15k max. Probably less than $5k.

This episode is going to cost united 200x that amount before it's done.

I used to love flying Continental, top notch in every regard, but the very day of the "merger" things went to hell and the first casualty was Continental employee morale.

I haven't flown United in a couple of years now and don't miss it all. American isn't as good as the old Continental but it's a helluva lot better than today's United.
