I kept meaning to go to St. Louis to see him play his once a month gig at BLUEBERRY HILL. Never did go. One of the true GODS of rock n' roll.

    That is sad news.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Back in the day, everybody got rich off of Chuck Berry.
    He was great.

I always wondered if he made a deal with the Beach Boys over "Sweet Little Sixteen" which they turned into "Surfin' USA".
Maybe he just let them have it.

Many years ago (1995), there was a ten-part series call The History of Rock and Roll, with interviews with the greats, often commenting on each other. What I found interesting about the part on Berry is that (they explained) his sound didn't come up from the blues traditions of other black musicians at the time. His rhythms were 4/4 time and much more derivative of country than blues. It was an interesting observation that I had not noticed until then (and I cannot remember who was the commentator). Fabulously informative series, I'd highly recommend it.

On another program I think, they detailed how Berry would do concerts in the '70s and '80s. He traveled with no band. He would say to the promoter, just get me some locals at scale that can play Chuck Berry. No rehearsal. He would just fly into town, guitar in hand. Show up, walk on stage, say one-two-three-four, and start playing. Pick up the check and leave.

Berry boxed Golden Gloves, so I bet that was a real punch.

He did some boxing in the reformatory, and was known to be tough, but not golden gloves. You might be thinking of Paul Le Mat of American Graffiti (which played Berry in the soundtrack I think), Le Mat won two golden gloves and some local titles. The scene where he takes on the guys beating up Toad was pretty easy for him.

Hearing the news of his death, I began seeking out video of Berry.

He himself says he boxed Golden Gloves, at 11:30 in this interview with Johnny Carson.

I stand corrected! Of course boxing GG and winning at it are two different things. But just participating at it would make him better than most.

Exactly! A boxer, whether a winner or not, is a lot different than some guy off the street.

When you first said Golden Gloves, my mind said "a title" (incorrectly), not that it could simply be participation. Mea Culpa.

#17: And one of Chuck's local pickup bands was Bruce Springsteen and E Street back when they were nobody.
