Being built in Lerwick, my boat is mostly Norwegian, and I want her smelling correct when she visits! I feel an affinity with your boats whenever I see one.

The larger boats you sail, their decks are souped? I would be very interested to know how they are sealed, how the wood is fed, and how water tight that makes them. I am seriously considering stripping my deck of paint as it is a fragile thin layer that hides potential problems, and the wood is not really fed.

Your experience would be valued. Maybe just tar and cotton in the seams, and then washed in secret sauce, as was the old way, no doubt.

My decks are Northern Red Larch (larix decidua). I stripped a little part few days ago to have a look, its ten years old, mostly dry until now. It looks fine, but thirsty.

the boats I work on are not decked, and I am not an expert on decked boat. But I know Owatrol d1 topped with d2 is commond. i used that for the twarths on my Argie15. its also common with raw linseed oil topped with boiled linseed oil. One thing I do know is that its important to fill the pores well before adding a sealing layer on top. if you trap water under a sealed top layer you get water in and mold. Painted areas is treated wit raw linseed oil, and then linseed oil with colour pigment. Imortant to avoud trapping moisture under the paint. linseed paint breathe. Please share å photo of your boat! (and the bird if its still around :-)

    Lug ketch Zulu type. Lerwick 1910. 42' x 13'6" x 6'.

    Search 'Kate LK126'

This is the first big boat i have owned... I have worked on many, but then you just do what the owner wants and don't make decisions. My decks are 1" 1/2 x 3" larch, my instinct is to feed wood, not cover it. Then it remains flexible, waterproof, and lasts.

There's a guy next to me with an old London boat, more than 100 years old. He is chopping up his deck, throwing it overboard, I am burning it in my woodstove. My deck is 10 years old, a youngster. I don't want to be him in ten years!

I'm really interested in the larger boats you sail on... They are fantastic. If you have time, could you ask about their deck treatment? Construction and maintenance..?

Decks are critical; if they go, everything goes with it.

    Thank you !

Interesting boat you have there luposonic! I need to talk to people to give you good info on treating decks on our larger boats. I guess its also a question if you want a mint condition deck? We have a 50 ft motor cutter. The deck on this boat is made of pine, not far from Lark, but its very dark in colour, I guess after many years of treating with oil, and maybe some tar too.

No, a working deck that can easily be maintained, but waterproof. Kate was a herring drifter.

    Any info appreciated, thank you.

Lupossonic have you looked in this thread for thoughts on deck treating "norwegian style" http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthre...t=colin+archer

Have not searched throu it myself, but these people might know more about it then me. :-) BTW joined your Kate-thread, but must take time to read more about your project ;-)

I wish I was. I discovered too late that I wanted to go, and its a polular seminar, and fully booked. But my friend is there with the Åfjordsboat we have been working on this winter. We worked extra hard to get it ready for this seminar. New rudder, keip wooden blocks and some bottom paint. When the boat get back to Bodø, we will start the sailing season here. We didn`t have time to paint the sheer strake, but will do when temperatures allow.

Its around zero celsius in that area now. They are working hard with fishing and rowing, so I believe they stay warm. The åfjordboat is the smallest in middle of the photo. and right in this below. They do get some cod to 😁

A new project with fixing a faering. New stem and replacing a plank

But sailing will soon be the priority.

Too much wind today, so sailing was replaced with making a tarp cover for the rig. The mast and sail can now be raised and ready for sailing in 5 minutes. proof of early season is the powder snow on the tarp 😎

I have the same problem, however there are always snow flurries the 1st week of April. Spring fever is easy to catch.

Cleaning beaches on an Island outside Bodø. The Coastal federation is one of many organizations to take part in this every spring. And we got the best way to get there too 😊 But sad to see how much small plastic pieces you can find.

Shared this video in another thread also. Sailing together in small boats is something I have not don too much before, but its really fun! We have decided to organize a small regatta for faerings here in Bodø in june. We are hoping to get more activity with smaller boats. We got some economical support to build two 20 ft. (treroing) square sailed Nordlandsboats. The local boatbuilders here will build them, and we are really looking forward to that. It will be training-boats for using the larger square rigged boats

You're killing me Fred. My daughter is getting married in July in our garden. Renee says if I buy a ticket this year, I should only get a one-way ticket. Maybe next year.
Looks like so much fun both the building and sailing.
    Good luck with both.
