Joining The Norwegian Coastal Federation Bodø

Well I decided to join Joining The Norwegian Coastal Federation in Bodø https://www.kysten.no/ (scroll to bottom of page for english)

They are dedicated to reservation of Norwegian coastal culture, and that ofcourse includes wooden boats.

They have some boats including a 31 ft. åttring nordlandsboat. I will be learning to sail the åttring this spring, and now I participate in making it ready for the season. I will use this thread to share some photos of this boat and other activities.

Thanks thad. The one to the right is the åttring,,, well half of it :-) Looking forward to sail it in a few weeks. Its a little group of enthusiasts meeting in this barn once a week, restoring wooden boats.

Today we pulled "Hæringen" out of the shed. It will be launched in a few days, and ready for sailing next week

What was Hæringen originally used for?

Is the shelter aft just a cuddy for the crew to get out of dirty weather?

That shelter is wery small. I guess max four for seating and two (short people) sleeping. We use it to keep equipment, ropes fenders etc, and an outboard motor. (There is an outboard well in the boat)

When this boats was used for fishing, I believe they also used a boom-tent for shelter. This is a boat where you are close to the elements :-)

This is "Nordlændingen" A fembøring 50 ft. Long They say its the biggest Nordlandsboat to be found. The coastal federation owns a part in it, and there might be an opportunity to sail with her.

I dont know, about that transverse thing, but I will ask about it if I get to join in a sailing trip with it. I let you know :-) (Sorry about the photos been a bit blurry. Guess there is too much sawdust and glue on my mobile phone lens.

Viking gold is the most practical ballast, so yes. We are not obsessed with "bling" so its only for stability and safety... a must!

I hope to share more photos of Nordlændingen later :-)

Not familiar with the term stand off, but maybe something like this photo. Just a screenshot from a pdf dokument from the course. In one month I will join a regatta with traditional boats. I promise you more photos then �� Hæringen is gaff rigged. Gaff-rig (Called sneseil on these) was used a few decades on Nordlandsboats before the motor took over. Hæringen was first rigged with a square sail.

After sailing with Hæringen this summer, I will be allowed to be "Høvedsmann" (captain) and take her out by myself, as a member of the federation. These boats have their orign in the Northern part of Norway. The most beautiful boats belong in the most beautiful part of the coast.

Martin; if you ever arrive in this area some day, I gladly let you research this boat closely, and maybe even get a chance to sail with Hæringen.

Now there's an offer not to be missed! Thanks so much. There's something that really speaks to me about traditional Norwegian boats, perhaps why I have one from the Shetland Isles.

I was lucky the federation have some "bark-soup" for me to "bark" the sail on my nordlandsboat. This is for preserving the sails. It is birch bark boiled in salt water. It will give the sails the red/brown stain, and most important keep them from rot and molds. It will lay in this tub two days, and then hung up to dry. Stones to keep it down.

The barn is now crowded with faerings and other small boats.

I harvested some Birch bark, to give back to the federation after using their bark soup for my sails this is what gives the rusty color on the sails on this traditional boats

Yesterday we where sailing with some kids from an activity club in Bodø. One of the parents posted this photo of Hæringen. Not the best quality resolution, but a nice profile picture.

Today we pulled Hæringen out of the water for the winter. This year we will replace "Lottet" The transition part between keel and stem, and some planking aft. I will share the process here
