Savannah, Georgia built over a burial plot. Gravestones embedded into the runway.

I hope they're not Jewish graves... tradition calls for mourners leaving a stone behind to show that they were there.

I thought this was going to be a post about Barra runway, near to me.
That is unique, as far as scheduled services go.

Barra; "800 drunks clinging to a rock!", was how it was described to me by a Stornoway RNLI man.

I wonder how this guy would manage landing there..

It is not unusual for people to have rituals when flying on a plane, like wearing a St Christopher chain or keeping their eyes closed until they take off.

But one passenger took his beliefs a step further by covering himself in a plastic bag for the whole of his journey because his religion forbids him to fly over cemeteries.

This was the bizarre sight that greeted plane passengers when an Orthodox Jewish man covered himself under a plastic sheet.

It was believed the man is a Kohein, a religious descendant of the priests of ancient Israel, who are banned from flying over cemeteries.

I'm not sure people in ancient Israel were able to fly over anything, but what would I know

Can someone explain that to me please?
I am assuming there are air holes in the bag.

OK, landing on graves doesn't bother me at all. One thing I'm pretty sure about is that we need to worry about the living way more than the dead, but landing on the beach at Barra? Nah, maybe not.

Oddly enough, I was just researching the island of Mingulay, just south of there. The Mingulay Boat Song is one we sing regularly in the pub; great tune, everybody knows it, gets 'em all singing lustily. So, sez I, where the **** is Mingulay? and looked it up. It turns out everybody who lived there said 'Hell with it!' (or whatever the equivalent in Gaelic might be) about 1910 and left for more hospitable places. It's now a bird sanctuary. The Mingulay Boat Song was written in 1938 by some guy from Glasgow, and nobody from there ever actually sang it; they spoke Gaelic anyway, and it's in English. Still a good song..

Better that you direct that to the editorial staff at the Daily Mail.

Hmmmm... I thought it was to avoid physical contact with women.

There sure are some absurd religious practices on this planet.

Did god sanction the use of plastic bags?

I googled "Jew in a Bag" and sure enough, that pic came up. . Just had to try it.

So, just to clarify. Judaism has been around for @ 5000 or so years. Islam @ 2000?

And a nation that had been in existence for a little over 200 is going to tell these people how to get along? Seems like an uphill battle.

Islam about 1400 yrs, Christianity 2000. The thing is, neither one of them is one single thing (even at one point in time), but a wildly diverse collection of disparate ideas. Norm and the guy in the bag are by some definitions both Jewish. You don't do that, do you Norm?
