Thanks Rick. Something funny happens when you make things bespoke, ie, not to an existing design and often designed as it is being made. You can't see them with fresh eyes and often only see the faults. I'm a bit burnt out with this whole job so I tend to push on and not spend too much time planning. Still trying to come up with an elegant solution to the spreader ends, the time is drawing near

Here is Herreshoff's method of finishing spreader tips to lock in rigging. a thin bronze shim matches to the groove in the tip and bends around so that the machine screw can hold it in place. This takes care of the wire loading and prevents splitting of the tip. The shroud is served where it comes in contact with the spreader tip, against the bronze shim. It is, also, served above and below the tip to lock it in place. It is both simple and elegant. The smooth stainless prevents chafing on the leach of the jib. The serving is sein twine and is painted with artist's acrylic.

And to reduce water trapping. That spreader end fitting looks nice and simple to me. I'd add the wheel that Neil suggested earlier.

Thanks everyone for the spreader tip info, no doubt I will come with something complicated and then complain about how long it took Setting screws in epoxy.jpg

So what’s the deal with all the screws and the soldering iron? Set in epoxy to seal the holes?

Jim, the epoxy is to strengthen the threads in the timber. I screwed in metal thread screws to form a thread in the hole that was drilled to the minor diameter of the thread, removed screw, put as few drops of epoxy in the hole with a piece of wire and refitted the screw. When the epoxy sets, then remove screws, to do this you heat up the screw with a soldering iron. Being stainless, the heat transfer was very slow. A couple of bronze screws I used were very quick to become free because of the heat transfer. When the screws were removed, I made sure the holes/threads were free by using some screws with grooves cut them, like a tap. The screws to be used for final installation of hounds/sheave boxes will be bronze screws.

I feltt that metal threads, 3/16" BSW, with epoxy would be more reliable than wood screws in these reasonably shallow holes (3/4 - 1")

Forgot to add, not sure if I quite trust the West system thing where you drill say a 5/16" hole and fill the hole with epoxy with a screw just held in place until epoxy sets

Great work Adrian. The bronze fittings will develop a beautiful patina over time.
Do you dip the fastening screws in shellac or some other goo for the final installation.

Aaarrggh. Only one photo of the lot shows up. The one featuring the lift. Temporarily disabled 3rd party hosting signs mark all the rest. Very disappointing! Appears to be a nice looking craft.

The wooden spreaders on my Alberg 30 also had a similar arrangement at the tips. The shrouds nestled in a bronze strip bent to fit into the grove cut into the tip ends, then bent again at the ends, round the fore and aft corners? of the tips.

The shrouds fit into the grove, protected by the bronze strip and were captured by a second bronze strip (similar to the photo) over the tip of the spreader. Apparently the “base” strip protected the end of the spreader from wear/splitting potentially caused by the shrouds.

The shrouds were also loosely served like the above photo, and tied to the spreaders through two small holes drilled thru the sprayer. Sort of overkill, but the spreaders lasted 50 years or so before I replaced them with new ones for some offshore work.

Neil, not sure what to put on the screws, possibly the stockholm tar/beeswax combo I used on all the wood screws. Thanks everyone for the spreader tip info.
