Gartside # 207

Hi forumites,

a couple of months ago I have started a slow build of Gartside # 207. The boat is not build by myself, but by a small boatyard in Greece. Here are a some fotos of the process so far:

Here is a nice method to lift the frames lines to plywood pattern by use of a batten and a router: Haven't seen this so far!

The length of the assembly obviously is very much exaggerated by the lens in this shot! In reality the whole thing seems rather compact to me.

I'm from time to time only in Greece actually, and am living and working in Munich, Germany. The boatyard where the build takes place is sited in Pelion, close to Volos.

Nice to see someone giving at least some hope to a few Greeks, i expect the rates are somewhat cheaper than Blohm & Voss. May i ask where you sourced the iroko Thomas?

The boatyard sourced the Iroko together with the WRC planend for the planking from a wood merchant / dealer in Greece.

No no, at least not now! The build of # 207 will take quite some time, and I already planned the next sailing trip with the Romilly for May this year!

By the way, after having seen Don's boat I had to make this contribution to the build: A skylight, made by myself this time, mostly with hand tools:










I made it from Iroko to match the boat's expected trim and finished it with oil only - what is part of the low maintenance strategy I plan to adopt for the rest of the boat's trim also. I selected an oil with UV protection formula for outdoor use after having tested it on a couple of samples for one year in the greek sun and rain, and they seemed doing fine.

Yes, a dovetail, but combined with a tonge and groove joint as shown in this sketch from woodenboat #92:



Hopefully this complication adds to the tightness of the design ...

Yes, Gartside has a hand for beautiful lines. I remember having seen a Gartside design #109, now sailing as "Freya von den sieben Inseln", during her build in the boatyard, and her lines were breathtaking.

Here a comparision of #207 with some other, IMHO also very beautiful designs out of my selection process:

I love that plumb bow Thomas, ‘really looking forward to following this build. And your butterfly hatch looks superb!! Which oil did you use?

I used the SAICOS "Special Wood Oil", made for use on external wood surfaces as garden decks, garden furniture asf. I talked to the technical sales department there and they claimed to have good experiences in boat applications. While the instruction sheet specifies 2 coats of oil I remembered marine best practice and applied 5. Application can be done with a rag, very simple.



As mentioned before I have made a clotheline with about a dozen small wood samples with various numbers of coats and also w/out pre coating with a thin pre-coating oil and hang them out into the sun and rain. The results after one year out were positiv: The samples which had received 2 coats look still goot, those with 1 coat only showed clear signs of starvation (greyness) but without any flaking whatsoever, and were quickly restored to original apperance by applying one coat with the oiled rag without any sanding. Promising I woudl say, let's see how the skylight will do.

Lovely, looking forward to seeing this come together. Im curious, are they planning on building her right side up? Construction is triple skin over those frames, which I imagine would be easier done upside down?

Indeed, after some fore and back on the topic the boatyard decided to build her right side up. Main arguments were

1. to avoid rolling over of the rather wide boat and

2. to give some flexibility to the building process: Setting up the jigg and fastening the deck shelves right side up can now be followed by many other tasks before planking, e.g. installation of deckbeams, bulkheads, superstructure, engine beds and even sub structure of furniture, what is expected to be easier within an unplaked hull.

Of course, gluing up the hull from strips and espescially veneers will be more troublesome right side up.

So, after having "solved" the photobucket problem the brutal way (and by this having lost all the links to the photos of this thread so far) I am now able to show you some actual photos of the build.

The future boat has found its final building place in the workshop. The keel has been fixed to the workshop floor, an upper beam and a triangle structure at the stem. Frames and deck beams have beed produced and are now being added to the keel, first as try fit and are later then fine adjusted and bolted to the floors. Here are some photos of this stadium:
